Are there many real
innovators nowadays?

cademia struggles to
produce innovative
work leading to highimpact publications.
In the meantime,
the goal of every researcher is
to make as significant an
impact as is possible, gauged
mainly by a high number of
citations. Another parameter
is the visibility of the conferences or journals that re searchers choose to publish
their findings.
In an analogous way, companies strive to be more competitive and, as a consequence,
increase their levels of sustainability. More specifically,
start-up companies aim at
innovating in one or more
sections of their business models. Startups are characterized by a great similarity to academia because of the many
elements of innovation. On
the other hand, investors or other
organizations that fund projects set
widespread promotion and/or the
most feasible economic profit/return
as a target.
Many students wonder whether a
specific methodology that guarantees
competitiveness exists. In most cases, relevant knowledge and experience are more than desirable. Thus,
a researcher could take into consideration the literature as well as some

tools to use for an expected outcome
to be achieved. In fact, researchers
should keep up to date on more than
one body of literature. Similar problems are often studied in different disciplines under the guise of different
terminology. Thus, by making relatively negligible effort on learning new
terminology, research from another
field becomes accessible.
Interdisciplinary work requires
the additional effort of gaining a certain level of expertise in other disciplines apart from the one on which a
researcher focuses. A common mis-
take for students is to avoid conducting a thorough study of literature
before they start working on their
research topic. Not taking an existing bibliographies or applications
into consideration is not an appropriate methodology. So, while current
researchers may not reinvent the
wheel, they are obliged to cite the related work on which they relied.
A small fraction of research is
truly original work. More specifically,
it is a common phenomenon that a
significant amount of focus is given
to incremental rather than radical
