BLUEWAYS TO
BEAUTY AND FUN

or at least several decades, walkers, cyclists and runners have had
their greenways-strips of undeveloped land for their pursuits.
More recently, water enthusiasts have been establishing their
version: Blueways, or water trails are lengths of paddle-worthy rivers,
lakes or other waters. Keep in mind that there are many other floatable and fishable rivers in the region that have not taken on such an
identity.
And where better for such sustained sections of navigable,
great-fishing waters than the great terrain of the mountain region
of the Southern Appalachians? Here, alphabetically, is a sampling of
noteworthy blueways in our area:
* Alleghany Highlands Blueway, Virginia, includes the Jackson and
Cowpasture rivers as well as Lake Moomaw and Douthat Lake.
* Catawba River Blueway, North Carolina/South Carolina flows,
with interruptions for dams and pauses for lakes, for some 200 miles.
* Etowah River Water Trail, Georgia, snakes its way for 163 miles
across the northern part of the state.
* French Broad River State Trail, North Carolina, flows northward
for 117 miles from Rosman to the Tennessee border.
* Hatfield & McCoy River Trail, Kentucky, is made up of the relatively gentle flow of the Levisa Fork River.
* Hiwassee River Blueway, Tennessee, passes through the Cherokee National Forest and historic towns in southeastern Tennessee.
* (Upper) James River Water Trail, Virginia, runs through Botetourt and Rockbridge counties in 11 sections.
* Knoxville Blueway East, Tennessee, is comprised mostly of
the French Broad River and Douglas Lake as it makes its way to the
Cherokee National Forest.
* New River flows northward from North Carolina, through Virginia
and into West Virginia, with many sections ideal for floats and fishing.
Giles County, Virginia's 37 miles have taken on the name New River
Water Trail.
* Roanoke River Blueway, Virginia, flows for about 41 miles from
Montgomery County through the Roanoke metro area.
* Tennessee River Blueway, Tennessee, begins below Chickamauga Dam northeast of Chattanooga, runs through the city and on
westward into the Tennessee River Gorge. -KR
