Our 36th anniversary—celebrated Feb. 25 with our Corinthian Gala “Supper Club & Speakeasy” theme—was a huge success and, with more than 650 guests in attendance, a record event, special thanks to co-chairs Susan Jones and Kim Githler and the entire committee. This issue of ENVISION includes many provocative features, such as spinal surgery with Ashvin Patel, M.D., clinical research with Kirk Voelker, M.D., under way at Sarasota Memorial Hospital, and a quick look back—through the eyes of Tom Kelly, M.D.—at the amazing physicians and staff who helped Sarasota Memorial grow into the exciting, world-class healthcare system it has become today. And, last but certainly not least, you’ll read about Karen Kolschowsky’s battle with ovarian cancer and the work of her physician, Jim Fiorica, M.D., FACOG, in the areas of gynecologic oncology and genetic counseling. Sarasota is truly a fortunate community to have access to the high quality of healthcare we have for a county of only 350,000 people. In March, Sarasota Memorial was again named one of “America’s 50 Best Hospitals” by independent healthcare ratings company HealthGrades—the only Suncoast hospital ever to earn the distinction, which it has every year since the program’s inception in 2007.
