Real-WoRld ReseaRch Rx How clinical studies are changing the face of medicine by Carla Carwile M A LittLe R&R McManus says he doesn’t get bored—rather, he takes the time to catch up on reading and do some relaxation. “I love to read, and they have a great library. I enjoy talking with others taking part in the study. It’s a relaxing time for me.” But knowing the time he’s spending furthers a medication’s safe progress is a prime incentive, too. “I do like knowing I can help out in this way during retirement,” says the avid golfer and former sales professional. “I like making a little contribution.” While McManus continues his association with DaVita in Minneapolis, a new group of research subjects is being assembled in metro Denver. DaVita Clinical Research opened an expansive new facility in Medical Plaza 1 on the St. Anthony Medical Campus last summer. Longtime Coloradan Bambi Augustin is leading the recruitment efforts for Rocky Mountain study participants. “We’ve been very pleased with how interested people here are in learning more about DaVita and the work we’re doing,” Augustin states. “Several new studies will begin soon. It asked individuals with reduced kidney function to consider taking part in a clinical research study for a new medication. They would be compensated for their time and travel, and their participation could help those needing a next-generation prescription drug receive it sooner. “I was curious,” McManus says. “So I called.” Four years later, McManus has participated in five studies. Each has required a brief stay—from two to eight days— at DaVita’s Twin Cities site. He finds the time relaxing, the accommodations comfortable and the compliance criteria easy to follow. “You know, upfront, exactly what to expect— from dietary restrictions to the tests that will be run.
