skiers this season and
you might think you
are off piste. Tech
bindings, long just a core contraption to ease alpine touring, have
hit the mainstream.
This new wave of tech bindings
both boosts the downhill confidence of frame-construction
touring bindings, and allows for
solid touring capability. What's
more, established alpine binding
manufacturers have jumped on

board. Throw in the continued
softening of the telemark market
and the fact that more consumers
are looking to hit the sidecountry
and beyond, and you have a recipe
for a burgeoning retail SKU.
"There are more tech bindings
being sold now than ever," says
Eric Henderson, spokesperson
for Dynafit, which pioneered the
category with the release of its first
tech binding, designed by Fritz
Barthel, in 1986.
Part of the reason, he says, is that
there are now tech bindings for
every ski category, from lightweight
touring on up to beefy, resort-oriented models. Dynafit now offers 13
different tech bindings in its lineup,
from its SuperLite 2.0, which Hilaree Nelson used to ski the Himalaya's Lhotse Couloir this fall, on up to
its Beast 16, an alpine binding you
can tour in.
THE DEAL WITH DIN
Once DIN ratings entered the pintech picture, alpine heads started
turning. "It opened the door for
a lot of people," says Henderson.
"There's a segment out there that
wants that certification." Currently,
there are four companies making
DIN-certified tech bindings: Dynafit, Marker, Salomon, and Black
Diamond. That DIN standard,
says Peter Van de Carr of retailer
Backdoor Sports, is a big draw to
the conventional alpine crowd. "It's
brought in a whole new consumer
who might not have looked at the
