REM Surface Engineering
The benefits gained by REM’s traditional ISF® (Isotropic
Superfinish) Process when applied to rear-axle hypoid
gearsets are now well documented. Efficiency is gained;
friction, wear and operating temperature are significantly
reduced. The main impediment to commercially
implementing this process, however, is that it adds cost to
the manufacturing step in terms of process speed, work
in process and labor. In other words, it is not compatible
with a high volume lean production environment. To
reduce these costs, a novel high speed, automatable
process, Rapid ISF®, has been developed to superfinish
hypoid gears. Rapid ISF utilizes the best of REM’s
traditional process and combines it with drag finishing
technology. With drag finishing, a circular turret is located
above a circular bowl containing loose, ceramic media.
Parts are attached to multiple rotating spindles on the
turret, which in turn are immersed in the media in the
bowl below, and are dragged through the media. This
generates a high flow of media over the gearsets. By a
judicious choice of media and a chemical accelerator,
the hypoid gearsets can be superfinished in less than
five minutes to an Ra of < 4 μin, while maintaining gear
geometry. The high speed process can be programmed
to control the speed and direction of spindle rotation, the
spindle depth in the media, and turret speed.

The Scuderi Split-Cycle Engine is a newly proven
thermodynamic process that is proving to be the
most significant advancement in internal combustion
engines in over 130 years since Nicolas Otto added
the compression stroke and created what is today
the conventional four-stroke engine. This simple, but
revolutionary engine design obtains much higher
efficiency, power and emissions levels over conventional
and Diesel engines. The technology coincides with the
two new technical papers about the Scuderi Engine
that will be presented at the 2012 World Congress. The
Scuderi Engine is an advanced split-cycle configuration
that separates the four strokes of a conventional engine
(intake, compression, power and exhaust) into two
separate, but paired cylinders. The first cylinder is used
for intake and compression. The compresses air is
then transferred through a crossover passage from the
compression cylinder into the second cylinder, where
combustion and exhaust occur. By utilizing a unique
process of Firing After Top Dead Center (FATDC), the
Scuderi Engine uses a combination of high-pressure air in
the crossover passage and high turbulence in the power
cylinder. Because the cylinders are independent from
each other, the combustion process does not limit the
compression ratio in the compression cylinder.
