hat first got you started with
SAMPE?
It turns out that SAMPE Europe
was interested in improving its
programming of more active and
technology-directed conference
events within the SAMPE Europe
region and expanding activities. I
had just completed organizing and
running a Composites Symposium
at the well-known Hannover Messe
event in 2014. I was approached
by the then SAMPE Europe Vice
President, Arnt Offringa (SAMPE
Fellow) who was a speaker at the
Hannover Messe symposium. Arnt
asked me to consider taking on
the function of organizing and
managing SAMPE Europe's events
as the Conference Manager. I agreed.
My first
assignment
that
same
year was to attend the 2014 Fall
Conference which for the first time
would be held in Tampere, Finland
hosted by the SAMPE Finland Club
locally. The SAMPE Europe Board
requested my attendance to discuss
the Conference Manager position
and solidify the agreement going
forward. We both agreed upon the
job and assignments.

ow is the SAMPE Europe
Conference different from
other competing EU composites
conferences?
Many of the major European Union
composites events consist of
companies primarily
participating
in big " exhibition " events and
exchanging technology on show
floors. SAMPE Europe events, while
also having exhibitions, focus more
on personal interaction between
SAMPE Members (Europe as well
as from our network of Global
Regions), to exchange ideas on
advanced
technologies
through
technical presentations, panels, and
poster sessions.
SAMPE Europe's Summit, the
annual event of high-level leadingedge
technologists, provides the
lead-off prior to the 3-day JEC
www. sampe.org
Monday 2 May 2022 - the day before the JEC World
Paris opens its doors - SAMPE Europe will hold its
Executive Summit. Location is the Pullman Paris
Tour Eiffel Hotel, just aside the Eiffel Tower.
This year SUSTAINABILITY is our main Theme with topics like
Urban Air Mobility, the European vision on Aviation & Transport,
Sustainable Supply Chain, Energy saving, Materials Vision and
Manufacturing trends to be highlighted.
The Program of this Summit consists of a range of 12 high level
lectures by invited speakers only. Topics are composite related
innovations in Automotive & Transport, Space & Aerospace,
Advanced Materials and Process Engineering, as well as
Challenging Applications in other markets like Architecture,
Construction, Sports, Energy, Marine & more.

addition, the fall conference moves
around to various regions as a multiday
event. Composite and advanced
materials and process engineering
specialists present about 100
technical papers, tutorials are
offered, several local tours of major
companies are arranged, and, even
more important, the SAMPE Europe
Student Competition of Master's
and Ph.D. students compete with
presentations of their key research.
Many of them continue as SAMPE
members and expand their network
of colleagues within their fields.

hare your favorite SAMPE story
or memory:
The SAMPE community is global in
nature with SAMPE Europe being
a very strong part of the network
family. It feels like a family because
SAMPE members, and many of
their colleagues, work together to
develop and expand technology,
solve problems, invent new materials,
new processes, and investigate new
market applications. Contacts are
easy to initiate, easy to maintain,
and networks are easily expanded,
with contacts within easy reach via
phone or email. That makes work
easy and technically complete.

hat advice do you have for
the younger generation of
SAMPE members?
SAMPE offers many opportunities
to expand your skills and education
in areas that will not only assist
in your research, your daily job,
and/or help resolve and answer
questions regarding research or
problem solving but provide you
with a lifetime of network contacts.
Networking provides you with a
lifetime (and sometimes " lifeline " )
of experts, technology specialists,
and numerous senior specialists
both within the materials and
process engineering community,
and outside the boundaries of
your current technology interests.
