Last summer, we took our
son from San Diego to
Southern Utah University
in Cedar City for his freshman
year of college.We decided
beforehand that we would
take the opportunity to see the
scenic landscapes and enjoy
the events that make Cedar
City known as “Festival City,
USA.” Each night of the trip,
we got tickets for a production
at the Utah Shakespeare Festival. During each day, we
decided to experience the local color, and some natural
colors, too! We took an afternoon outing to the petroglyphs
at Parowan Gap and historical sites in charming
Parowan, and the kids loved dipping candles at the
Frontier Homestead State Park Museum. We were
also pleasantly surprised to discover the Kolob section of
Zion National Park.We had been to Zion several times,
but this was our first time to Kolob, pleased that, not only
was it visually stunning, with its towers of multi-hued sandstone,
we felt like we had the place to ourselves. The next
day we explored Cedar Breaks National Monument, just
in time for their Cedar Breaks Wildflower Festival! The
wildflower scavenger hunt was fun for the whole family
and the kids enjoyed taking the Jr. Ranger oath. A short
distance away, at Brian Head Resort, the boys rented
mountain bikes and pedaled the resort’s singletrack trails,
while my wife and I took ATVs up to the rim to photograph
wildflowers. We plan on returning during winter break to
ski those aspen-lined runs!

This summer, I went
on a road trip with
two girlfriends and
our first stop was Zion
National Park. I’ve
been to Zion several
times, but the others
were first-timers.We
had overnighted in
Kanab (a cool scenic
town with an OldWest vibe), and were approaching the
park from the east. Despite my supposedly-experienced
status traveling to Zion, I had never witnessed the amazing
views on the eastern part of the park! Driving through the
giant tunnel and entering on a high sandstone shelf, it felt
like we were entering a whole new world. After grabbing
a quick bite at the historic Zion Lodge, we were anxious
to get out and play.We ambitiously went straight for the
park’s signature hike: Angels Landing. It’s not the longest
hike in the world, but the trail is rather steep and not for
those who suffer from heights-related squeamishness. The
top is definitely worth it though – you truly feel like you are
on top of the world! We came back the next day, and did a
day hike in The Narrows, which must be experienced to
be believed. One of the best parts of Zion is, though it is
Utah’s most popular national park, it is silent and serene,
as a shuttle system was put in place a few years ago that
cut down on most private vehicle traffic through the
canyon. Also, make sure to visit the art galleries, gift shops,
and restaurants of Springdale, just outside the park’s
main entrance.
