My partner and I were
on a trip through
Southern Utah, and
we stopped in Bryce
Canyon for an afternoon
of hiking and
photography. Hiking
the Navajo Loop trail,
we realized that the
amazing scenery would
be even more stunning in the light of the morning sun.
Right then, we decided to stay an extra day, and made it a
goal to return the next morning and recapture Bryce in the
perfect light. We booked a night in a nearby hotel in Bryce
Canyon City, just outside of the park’s boundary. Setting
our alarm way too early, we entered the park in the predawn
darkness and set out along the rim of the canyon
looking for the perfect view. There was hardly anyone else
around, and we enjoyed the sounds of solitude – the
morning birds just beginning to sing and the rustle of the
breeze through the trees. We stopped in a particularly nice,
quiet spot, and watched as the sun’s light began to give
definition to the amphitheater of multi-hued sandstone
spires below. As the sun rose just over the horizon, we
were so mesmerized we almost forgot to photograph the
spectacle. The park came to life before our very eyes!
Watching the sun rise in Bryce Canyon National Park is
one of those once-in-a-lifetime experiences I will share
with friends when the conversation turns to inspiring
moments in my life.We will definitely be back.

Sunrise Among the Hoodoos
1
Visit www.brycecanyoncountry.com for more information
on Bryce Canyon National Park.
I recently visited Utah
on a cross-country road
trip. While I found the
entire state fascinating,
it was the day I spent
driving on Scenic
Byway12 – Utah’s
All-American Road,
which remains one of
the most memorable
days of my entire trip. I began in the tiny hamlet of Torrey,
and drove southward climbing over Boulder Mountain.
As I summited the crest of the mountain, I enjoyed stopping
at the scenic pullouts to gaze upon the geology of Capitol
Reef and the northern Canyons of the Escalante below.
Next, I stopped in Boulder, a tiny town with some lovely
restaurants and a scenic lodge. I lunched there, and chatted
with the friendly locals about some “must see” destinations.
After a stop at the Anasazi State Park Museum, where
I walked amongst the ruins of an ancestral Pueblo village,
I drove across the impossible switchbacks and down a
hair-raising ridgeline called “The Hogsback.” I hiked the
5 miles round-trip to Lower Calf Creek Falls (a stunning
sandstone waterfall that empties into an emerald pool), and
overnighted in the town of Escalante. The next day I
stopped at Kodachrome Basin State Park (photo), and
the towering Grosvenor Arch. Highway12’s finale brings
travelers to Bryce Canyon National Park and then on to
Red Canyon, two hoodoo-filled parks that offer endlessly
mind-blowing scenery, a fitting climax to the most stunning
road in the country.
