LOW-CARBON ENERGY
ESB and Fluence
complete deal for largest
energy storage portfolio in
Europe during 2021
IN SEPTEMBER 2021, ESB and energy
storage experts Fluence announced
details of a 75MW/150MWh energy
storage solution at ESB's
plant
in
Poolbeg, Dublin, and a 30MW/60MWh
project at a second ESB plant at South
Wall, Dublin. The Poolbeg battery is
the largest by energy capacity signed
in the EU.
Coupled with ESB / Fluence
projects already under way earlier
in 2021, at Inchicore, Dublin, and
Aghada, Co Cork, the 308MWh
fleet also represents the largest total
energy storage portfolio transaction
in Europe. When completed, the
portfolio will have the capacity
to power approximately 321,000
homes and businesses in Ireland at
times of peak demand.
The Fluence projects are ESB's
first major battery projects and mark
a step change in the scale of stored
energy capacity. The 38MWh Aghada
and 60MWh Inchicore systems are
due for completion in early 2022.
The addition of 150MWh at Poolbeg
and 60MWh at South Wall, which
are due for completion in
early
2023, provide battery storage of
scale for Dublin. All four projects are
two-hour duration systems, enabling
them to replace many of the grid
services that would otherwise be
powered by fossil fuels. Previously,
operational battery-based energy
storage
systems
in
Ireland
have
been short duration and capable of
providing full power for 30 minutes
or less.

ESB NETWORKS' Dingle Project
reached an exciting milestone in
October 2021, when the final pieces
of
the
technology
test-bed were
implemented. The project is seeking
to understand the impact that
technologies such as solar PV, heat
pumps,
electric vehicles and EV chargers
will have on the electricity network,
and how these technologies might be
controlled to minimise this impact
and, at times, provide supporting
services to the Distribution System
Operator (DSO)
Throughout
October
residential-scale batteries,
and
November, ESB Networks invited
multiple stakeholders to visit Dingle,
to see the full technology suite in
operation and meet some of the
ambassadors and trial participants
who are working closely with the
project. The ambassadors shared
their experience of transitioning from
passive electricity consumers into
active energy citizens and highlighted
the role that the project is playing in
ecars Glassyard
ESB ENERGY unveiled its new flagship
eight-bay rapid charging hub for electric
vehicles in September this year.
In
association with Transport for London (TfL),
the aptly-named Glass Yard Hub is TfL's first
purpose-built, stand-alone electric vehicle
(EV) charging hub in the city.
To give you an idea of how big a
deal these new eight EV chargers are,
they can provide the same amount of
energy required to power 150 homes.
That's a lot of green energy. By using
the new EV charging hub, Londonbased
EV drivers are not only helping
to cut carbon emissions, but they're
also contributing to the generation of
renewable energy. The Glass Yard Hub
features a state-of-the art solar-powered
canopy, containing 52 solar panels. The
Hub is just another step forward in ESB
Energy's commitment to reducing its
carbon footprint, by not only supplying
clean, green energy to thousands of
homes and businesses across Britain,
but by generating renewable electricity
too. ESB Energy partnered with TfL and
Siemens to launch the Glass Yard Hub.

In early November,
