My husband and I have finally decided
to do a complete interior makeover of
our dated and very stale-looking home.
Should we hire the services of a professional designer or trust ourselves in making the right selections?
Whether you are planning a new construction or
renovation project, or simply an interior facelift, a designer can help you immensely. A designer will provide
professional guidance and offer ideas that you may
not have given any thought. While there is a cost associated with hiring a professional designer, they can
actually save you money and time by avoiding costly
mistakes. As we've all experienced at one time or
another-mistakes can be very expensive to change.
From flooring to cabinetry to plumbing to lighting
fixtures, not to mention furnishings and accessories,
there are many options that need to be coordinated.
In some cases, the coordination of outside and interior selections may also come into play.
Since most people do not work in construction or design, hiring a designer who will work with your builder

or contractor should make the project run smoother.
It's also important to hire a designer who understands
your style and taste. Good communication is critical
for that to happen. While it is advisable for a client to
be open minded to the designer's ideas and suggestions, it is critically important that the designer
listens to YOU. The bottom line is that the design
project should reflect YOUR taste and lifestyle-not the
designer's.
Budget Considerations. Some customers want selections within a specific budget-others want higher-end
products. My feeling is that you can have a beautiful
home or room regardless of your budget. Just remember, while a bucket of paint cost the same no matter
what color you choose-a poorly selected paint color
will cost more-not to mention the wasted time and
added disruption-when it needs to be redone. And
the same can be said for any poor selection-you'll
regret it and the cost of replacement will sting even
more. With an experienced designer, most selection
mistakes (and the cost of correction) can be avoided.
Choosing a Designer. In choosing a designer, keep in
mind that there are different types. There are some
designers who specialize in only one area of the home
