Last issue of EPN… Sadly, this is the final edition of EPN. When EPN was launched in 1972, it created and defined a new market for pan-European specialist technical media. Before the internet, it was one of very few sources (if not the only source) for electronics engineers to keep abreast of product developments and for advertisers to promote their products and technologies regionally. Back then, with its paper-based bingo card response system, a typical EPN issue would generate 30,000 to 40,000 reader enquiries or sales leads per month. Its unique reason for being was that it was a lead-generating machine and it was able to charge a premium for that. Today, there are dozens (if not hundreds) of print and online media channels available to readers and advertisers in Europe and the information and lead-generating capability that was once so unique to EPN has now become commoditised. The role of the traditional business-tobusiness media in the electronics industry has moved from centre stage to the margins as companies’ advertising budgets are squeezed and fragmented, and they put more focus on PR investment. After 40 years of charting the electronics industry across Europe - the introduction of the PC, the internet, and most recently the mobile comms world of the smartphone and the tablet - EPN ceases publication this month.
