industry accomplishments and determined by a committee. "I'm so
humbled by the fact that we have
so many members doing such great
work," Mr. Brown said. "And people
were doing this decades ago; they
were making things happen in the
'40s, '50s and '60s. It's unbelievable the passion they had back
then and still have today. I'm so
thankful we were able to start honoring people."
Mr. Springer recalled members
such as Bill Pulver, 1987-87 BEMA
chairman, who had already passed
away when the award was given to
him. Mike Gude, publisher, Sosland
Publishing Company, accepted the
award on Mr. Pulver's behalf in 2006.
Of the 21 awards, six were presented by the recipient's son, such
as Bill Pulver (1928-1997)'s award,
which was presented by his son, Dick
Pulver, to Mr. Gude. "It's something
special when the son can give this
award to his dad, and there are tears
in the audience," Mr. Brown said.
"Sometimes, there are also tears
from the son," recalled DJ LeCrone,
who presented the award to his father, Dale S. LeCrone (1926-2014)
in 2003. "It's really special to see
anyone receive this honor, but it's a
little something more when it's your
own dad, and you know what he's
put into the association. And to be
the one to present the award is obviously very touching."
Mr. Springer, who was stunned to
learn the award had been renamed in
his honor, gave a heartfelt and sincere
acceptance while issuing a task to all
BEMA members. "I challenge you to
get involved," he said. "We have not
achieved our greatness yet." BEMA
