COMMENTARY
Full circle
I grew up in a rural area of central New York state, and the
country road I lived on - the kind with uneven pavement
and no center line - was home to three small family dairy
farms. It wasn't uncommon to wake up for school on any
given morning to find a few Holsteins from a neighboring
farm loose in our yard.
When I went off to college and decided to pursue a career
in journalism, I never would have expected that many years
later I would end up editing a magazine focused on the dairy
industry. But now it truly feels like a full-circle moment,
taking me back to my roots. That feeling hit me especially
hard when I and the rest of the Dairy Processing team had
the pleasure of visiting Dairy Farmers of America (DFA)
headquarters in Kansas City, Kan, this summer.
As a farmer-owned cooperative, DFA works to serve its
more than 12,500 diverse family farmers across the country
and promote the industry, as a whole. Spending time with the
team at DFA, learning more about new initiatives, such as the
" Nerd Herd " and the CoLab (and, of course, grabbing a cold
glass of chocolate milk from their Milk Bar) made me think
of all those family farms I grew up around. Those farms,
and others just like them across the
country, are the soul of the dairy
industry and of their communities.
So, as you dive into this issue and
learn about the latest dairy snacking
trends, how processors are getting
creative with enzymes and the ways
in which automation is helping to
streamline operations in processing
facilities, don't forget to say a little
thanks to the farmers who remain at
the heart of it all, working day after day to help bring us the
products we know and love.
