ACTIVATING
ARCHITECTURE SERVICE
The Architecture Club at Thaddeus
Stevens College promotes excellence
in architectural technology, training,
and practice. Tedd Williams is the
first-year architecture instructor
at the College, and as faculty
advisor of the club, he encourages
comradeship, cooperation, unity,
and community service amongst
architecture students on campus.
" We really champion community
service, making sure the students
understand that it's the small
things that make a difference in
people's lives, " Tedd said. " For both
personal and professional growth,
you have to give back. It's a value
we're keeping at the forefront as
our College continues to grow. "
Each semester, students are
required to participate in six
two-hour volunteer sessions as
part of the Architecture Club. This
fall, students hosted 21 community
service activities from September
through December. Tedd says
he loves seeing when students
recognize their work is impacting
the community around them.
Becoming part of the club prepares
students for the workforce after
graduation by providing many
different activities and interactions
to supplement their coursework.
Cyler Poe is a second-year student
at the College and Vice Chair of the
Architecture Club. Each architecture
student is encouraged to join the
Architecture Club, but he decided to
take the requirement one step further
and pursue a council seat within the
club because he values community
service and wanted to give back while
he was a student. As Vice Chair,
Cyler was excited to organize a
campus-wide food drive competition
this year, hoping to bolster
community service throughout
the College community.
" It was an opportunity and a friendly
competition to encourage more
participation-between majors
or between departments, " Cyler
said. The club donated proceeds
to local organizations focused on
hunger as well as to Thad's Food
Pantry on campus to serve students
who may be food insecure.
Meghan Glick is a first-year architecture
student at Thaddeus Stevens College.
She chose to get involved with the
Architecture Club for the abundant
opportunities to volunteer and network
in the Lancaster community. As part
of the club, Meghan has enjoyed
participating in campus clean ups,
volunteering at the Lancaster Print
Crawl, and helping with renovation
construction projects for IMPACT!
Missions, an organization dedicated
to providing renovations to blighted
homes for purchase by low-income
first-time home buyers.
" We are so fortunate and lucky
to be able to get this education
so it's important to give back, "
Meghan said. " It's really cool to
know that we're making an impact. "
