PHOTO CONTEST Elements of Water T he Hawaii Water Environment Association (HWEA) and the American Water Works Association (AWWA) - Hawaii Section recently held a photo competition "as a way to increase membership participation at our annual conference and to help us recognize that there are aesthetic elements to the work we do," says the HWEA's Greg Arakaki of Kennedy/Jenks Consultants. The categories were "Age is Only a Number," with photos depicting water and wastewater infrastructure more than 35 years old, and "It's a Dirty Job," with photos showing the aesthetic side of what is otherwise considered a "dirty job." The judges included Building Industry Editor David Putnam and Senior Designer Ursula A. Silva. The winning entries were unveiled during the 2014 Hawaii Water Conference at the Hawaii Convention Center on May 7-9. The first-place winners were: "Age Is Only a Number" 1st PLACE TITLE: Honolulu Sewers: Days of Future Past PHOTOGRAPHER: Ann Miyasato, Senior Engineer, R.M. Towill Corp. LOCATION: Kakaako DESCRIPTION: The juxtaposition of the centuryold sewer manhole against the mid-1900s warehouses and modern high-rises in the background serves as a timeline of the evolution of Kakaako's development into the future. Although this sewer manhole is still serviceable, well past its design lifespan, this photo brings awareness of the aging infrastructure in the heart of Honolulu. "It's a Dirty Job" 1st PLACE TITLE: Trash Outfalls at Pearl Harbor PHOTOGRAPHER: Audrey Haerle, GIS Analyst, The Limtiaco Consulting Group LOCATION: East Loch, Pearl City DESCRIPTION: Mangroves accumulate sediment and trash from a storm water outfall that leads directly to Pearl Harbor. Volunteers work throughout the year to remove debris, but much is out of reach. Cleaning up paradise is a dirty job-but who is going to do it? 42 | BUILDING INDUSTRY HAWAII | JUNE 2014
