Is Your Sewer Squeaky Clean?
CCTV cameras take the plunge
to probe your pipes for problems
A
nyone approaching the age of 50
learns from his or her doctor that
the time has come for a colonoscopy.
While it may not be the news you
want to hear, it's still an important
preventive measure to keep you
healthy now and in the future-and
so we all go through it.
Sewer lines aren't much different.
They need regular inspections and
cleaning to prevent costly sewer pipe
replacement or repairs and future
sewer system failure. Many of Hawaii's
buildings were constructed in the 1970s
or earlier, which means that they are
now due for a "sewer line colonoscopy."
In fact, sewer system failure can
begin in buildings as young as 12
years old. A review of your building's
"insides" can prevent costly sewer
abatement, replacement and sewer
system failure. Considering that
the average sewer abatement can
cost $3,500 to $40,000 or more and
may not be covered by insurance,
and that policy sewer riders top
out at $5,000, which wouldn't begin
to cover expenses, prevention and
maintenance are the way to go.
Did you know you can conduct a
closed circuit television inspection
(CCTV) of your sewer pipes in
much the same way a colonoscopy
procedure is done? Not only is it
available with today's technology, but
the U.S. Environmental Protection
Agency (EPA) also considers
CCTV the most efficient sewer line
inspection method on the market.
