to continually improve our efficiencies
and discuss issues before they become
problems, " said Rich Ivol, operations
manager at Allegheny Petroleum.
During slower months in 2020,
Allegheny Petroleum focused on digital
transformation projects within its
manufacturing sites, said Ron Sandoe,
a project manager with the company.
" Processes were automated, combined
and streamlined for more efficient order
to delivery of our products and data, "
Sandoe said. " This slower period offered
us the opportunity to teach these new
skills across functions using keystrokes
in place of paper in operations. These
efficiencies will carry on into our future,
[a] post-pandemic win. "
One component of efficiency is
direct, respectful communication to
sort out issues. " Our mindset is to
take blame out of the narrative, " said
Kudis. " When there is an issue, we take
a deep dive as a group to identify any
disconnect in our processes or gaps in
training. We often have employees,
from different departments and from
different locations, meet virtually to
get at the root cause of an issue, share
best practices or answer questions.
We have even installed cameras at the
work stations in the warehouse, which
has become useful for connecting
those folks with the lab or other plants
without taking them away from their
work stations unnecessarily. A lot of
things can be done more efficiently
when you have the right people working
toward a common goal and able to
connect easily. "
An open question, said Emigh, is
how companies " transition back to
whatever the new normal is. "
" Will they learn valuable lessons
where they've fallen short? Or will they
seize a kind of new normal and move
into that? " Emigh observed. " That's
a litmus test that I'll be watching for
with my clients. "
At Allegheny Petroleum, Kudis is a
firm believer in taking action and in
continuous improvement. " Change
is good, and shake-up is good, " she
said. " It forces us to unveil unknown
opportunities. No matter the impetus,
change is constant and creates opportunity
to become better equipped to
successfully maneuver whatever waits
on the other side. "
