oon after the almost instantaneous
success of her book, Little Women,
Louisa May Alcott was quoted as saying
"My little books are read and valued in a way
I never dreamed of." It is hard to imagine
what she would think if she knew that her
childhood classic would remain popular for
over one-hundred-forty-five years and that for
approximately eighty years both children and
adults would collect and treasure Madame
Alexander dolls inspired by its characters.
Louisa May was born in 1832 in
Germantown, Pennsylvania to Amos Bronson
Alcott and Abigail May Alcott. She was the
second of four sisters with Anna Bronson
born in 1831; Elizabeth Sewell, 1835; and
Abigail May, 1840. The Alcotts moved over
twenty times in a thirty year span primarily
due to Bronson's inability to convey his
idealistic educational methods to the members
of the communities in which he taught. The
Alcotts were New Englanders and returned to
Boston in 1834 where he started the Temple
School, which remained open for seven years.
They were part of mid-nineteenth century
reform movements and were considered
avant-garde, bohemian types often at odds
with the establishment. Bronson Alcott
became a member of the Transcendental
Club in 1836 -- a group comprised of liberal
thinkers including Ralph Waldo Emerson.
