Derrett System Use of Cues for the Send Type of Cue • Positional cues (relative to equipment) • Acceleration/ deceleration • Arm changes • Shoulders (blind-cross body line or BCBL) • Legs • Verbal cues Actual Cue • On the takeoff side of the turning jump, as close to the jump as possible • Deceleration • Use the arm closest to the dog until the dog is committed • Facing the direction the dog is going • Leg closest to the dog • Dog’s name and/or Dig command may be used before or at commitment • Keep your eyes on your dog Both forward and lateral sends should achieve the same response from the dog (the dog jumps with relative collection with either cue combination). Handlers should consider where the course goes next when deciding which type of send to use. If the handlers’ path out of the send goes back in the direction they came from, generally a forward send is more appropriate. However, if the handlers’ path goes 90° away from the dog’s path, generally a lateral send is more appropriate since it will help handlers get farther downstream and stay ahead of the dog. This also helps handlers with serpentines, front crosses, and so on. Some common send scenarios are shown in Figures 1 through 6. For the purposes of numbering, assume the sequences are all shown midcourse and the handler does not have a lead-out advantage. D Derrett System 2 2 2 • Eye contact Awesome Paws Handling System (APHS) There are two types of sends in APHS, the forward send and the lateral send. The primary difference between them is the forward send involves either deceleration or no motion from the handler. The lateral send involves lateral motion from the handler. APHS strives to use a balance of cues to achieve the desired effect. Therefore, the handler must be sure to use enough forward cues to get the dog to continue moving forward to the jump. 3 1 3 1 3 1 Deceleration cues upcoming turn Arm change for front cross happens at commitment Shoulder pull happens at commitment Handler should decelerate hard into the blue handler’s position before commitment. If a front cross is desired, the arm change would happen at commitment. If no front cross is desired, a shoulder pull would happen at commitment. Handler uses deceleration, backward motion, or no motion as a turning cue. Forward cues are: shoulders facing forward, inside arm forward, verbal Jump cue. Location is the takeoff side of the jump, but exact position is not relevant. The farther the handler is from the jump, the greater the turning cue. At commitment, handler turns her shoulders (away or into the dog) and runs in the new direction. For the pull, the handler may need to hesitate and/or step laterally to the left. Dog might read the motion behind him as a rear cross if handler runs in the new direction before the dog commits to the left turn. 65
