LOS ANGELES COUNCIL OF SKI CLUBS

The Los Angeles Council of
Ski Clubs currently consists of 26
snowsports clubs that cover a
large area from Santa Barbara to
the north, the Inland Empire to
the east and Long Beach to the
south. There is much diversity in
terms of the club makeup in the
council and the activities that result.
The home base for most of
the council clubs is Mammoth
Mountain Ski Resort, a five hour
drive from central Los Angeles.
Mammoth offers a myriad of outdoor activities all year for the
club members. Los Angeles
Council also participates in the
FWSA Ski Week each year with
VP of Travel, Sandy Blackwell at
the helm for the LA contingent.
Banff is on the schedule for next
season. In addition, LAC takes advantage of FWSA's international
trips which have expanded to a
year-round schedule. Lastly, outof-state and international trips
are taking place at the individual
club level.
LA Council is also involved
in a well organized race season
within Far West Racing Association. Los Angeles is comprised of
two race leagues: ROKKA and

ULLR, chaired by Laura Preiss
and Ken Kawahara, respectively.
Included on the schedule are:
ROKKA Race Camp; the Ski,
Ride & Race Week; three race
weekends, the SoCal Championships, and the Far West Racing
Association Championships.
The council has two main
events it hosts during the year on
an annual basis organized by VP
of Programs, Leslie Eastham: The
Presidents Luncheon held in August and the Snow Gala held in
November. Both are excellent opportunities for the clubs to get together and share in the ski lifestyle we all enjoy. VP of Membership, Todd Hood, gave a presentation on succession planning
this year at the President's
Luncheon on August 12, 2017,
and our Man and Woman of the
Year will be selected at the Gala
on November 4, 2017.
The 85th FWSA Convention in Boise, Idaho in June this
past year was one not to be
missed. The council had 18 members in attendance. In addition to
the many activities offered, one

of the highlights is the Awards
Banquet held on Saturday evening. Congratulations go out to
the following LAC recipients:

Award - Todd Hood; FWSA Councils' Woman of the Year - Jane
Gutierrez; Charity and Community Service Recognition - Four

and Pacific Rim Alliance (Catherine
Ohl, President); Wentworth Award
for Outstanding Publication - Pacific Rim Alliance (Catherine Ohl,
Editor); Outstanding Website
Award - The Unrecables (Lee
Armstrong, Webmaster), and Los
Angeles Council of Ski Clubs
(Bonnie West, Webmaster).
Los Angeles Council is well
represented at the Far West Ski
Association level as members of
the Board of Directors, Board of
Trustees, and its various committees. There are nine members
currently who have been part of
the group in the past (some for
many years). FWSA officers

elected at the June Convention, or
subsequently appointed Committee Chairs are: Jane Wyckoff (Pacific Rim Alliance), Trustee; Paula
Hazzard (Edelweiss Ski Club,) VP
of Public Affairs, Catherine Ohl
(Pacific Rim Alliance), Awards
Chair and Webmaster; Sigrid
Noack (Unrecables), Charities and
Our Community Chair; Cindy
Krupp (Century City Ski Club),
VP of Communications and Clubs
and Councils Communication
Awards Co-Chair; and David
Krupp (Century City Ski Club),
Athletic Scholarship Program
Chair.
In addition to those I have
already mentioned, I want to
thank the following LAC Board
members for their diligent efforts
in making the council a great
team to work with: VP of
Communications, Cynthia Carter;
Treasurer, Karen James, Secretary,
Sandra Knapp, and Past President,
Kathleen Byrnes.
