STAR TREK DISCOVERY IS EN ROUTE TO OUR SYSTEM
AGAINST THE SUSPICIONS-AND
perhaps hopes-of some fans who
were beginning to insist that Star Trek
Discovery was a hoax that would never
see the light of day, footage for the new
show (which will stream exclusively
on the CBS All Access SVOD platform)
debuted in May, showcasing stars
Sonequa Martin-Green and Michelle
Yeoh traversing a desert planet (shot
on location in Dubai), encountering a
ceremonial ship full of newly designed
Klingons, and arguing about Starfleet
tactics and aliens that can sense the
coming of death.
There's been no new Star Trek to
be had on television since 2005, and
hardcore Trekkies (they'll demand
you call them Trekkers) have fumed
over the J.J. Abrams-produced "Kelvin
Timeline" movies that recast Kirk, Spock
and "Bones" McCoy in a modernized,
action-oriented Trek universe. So the
announcement of Star Trek Discovery
has been met with both hope and
trepidation by fans who rightly believe
that the only way to really explore Gene
Roddenberry's optimistic vision of the
future is on television. But that's about
all Trekkers can agree on-the Discovery
trailer has been savaged by fans
complaining that the look of the show
derives too much from the lens-flared
"Abrams-verse" and is too futuristic for a
show supposedly set 10 years before the
original Kirk and Spock's adventures.
The presence of Alex Kurtzman, one
of the co-writers and producers of
the 2009 theatrical Star Trek and its
followup, Star Trek Into Darkness, has
evoked comparisons to the the movie
universe, despite statements from
CBS that Discovery will take place in
the original Kirk and Spock's "Prime"

bulk of preproduction). And
the early departure of Bryan
Fuller, who would have been
the series' show-runner before
he left to work on American
Gods for Starz, plus a series of
delays that pushed Discovery's
debut back from January 2017
to May and finally (we hope)
to September sowed doubts
about the show as well. More
worrisome is the presence of
Batman & Robin scribe Akiva
Goldsman as an Executive
Producer.
Discovery also has
production talent from
Deep Space Nine and HBO's
superb Rome (April Nocifora),
as well as writer-director
Nicholas Meyer (who wrote
the second episode as well
as The Wrath of Khan - and
is now reportedly leaving
Discovery to do a Khan prequel
