Kristen M. Fitzpatrick

Angela Burgess is the Executive Director of the IEEE Computer
Society, the largest operating unit of IEEE, where she oversees
a staff of 96 in two offices, Washington, D.C. and California.
She has been an employee for 26 years, all of them as a
member of the Computer Society staff.

Kristen M. Fitzpatrick, MLIS, IEEE University Partnership
Program Manager, was named recipient of the 2011 Joyce E.
Farrell IEEE Staff Award. As manager of the program that
seeks to "connect, support, and share the great works of the
next generation of IEEE leadership," Kristen has expanded the
program's geographical boundaries. She is being recognized
for her undeniable influence on some of the brightest young
minds in technology-and the value that influence brings to
IEEE.

Ms. Burgess began her career with IEEE at the society's office
in Los Alamitos, Calif. as an Editor with IEEE Software magazine.
She became the magazine's Managing Editor, Executive Editor,
and then Publisher. She was named Executive Director of the
society in 2007 at a pivotal time. She worked tirelessly to enlist
the support of volunteers and staff alike to move the Computer
Society and IEEE into greater alignment and create a constructive, collaborative work environment. As a result, she reduced
the society's operating expenses and reversed membership
decline.

Kristen's approach is honest and up front. She serves as a
mentor and resource, not only for all that's available within
IEEE, but also all that's connected to IEEE. She encourages
students to take full advantage of IEEE membership. As one
nominator said, "There is no task too inconsequential for
Kristen, and she is always willing to help. She uses all her circles
of influence to assure that people get what they need to be a
success."

Ms. Burgess has overseen the Computer Society's investment
in the IEEE's first two certification programs-a professional
education program and a conference publishing program. She
also helped to develop the Computer Society's Professional
Activities and Industry Advisory Boards, and she executed an
IEEE Competitiveness Initiative that increased membership
and pioneered a new model for corporate membership.

Established in 1996, the Joyce E. Farrell IEEE Staff Award is
presented annually for exemplary professional performance
and consistent practice of the IEEE Enabling Staff Culture.
Recipients receive a certificate, engraved Waterford crystal
bowl, honorarium, and have their name and photograph
added to the Farrell Award plaque on display in IEEE offices.

Since 2007, she has reduced operating expenses; implemented controlled planning; and integrated IT systems and the HR,
Accounting, and regional staff office operations. In addition,
she helped develop several resources for computing professionals, including Build Your Career , which features job postings,
tutorials, and a selection of articles from IEEE Computer
Society publications. Today, she currently oversees further integration of digital library platforms.

She earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Journalism and
International Studies from Iowa State University,and an MBA
from the Peter F. Drucker School of Management, Claremont
Graduate University. Angela is a member of ASAE.
