21st AnnuAl EmployEr prEfErEncE survEy that employers rated favorably on their ethical climates would also be rated favorably on other important characteristics, including work-life balance initiatives, organizational stability and innovativeness. For NSBE members, it seemed reasonable that attractiveness ratings would also be related to the organization’s relationship with the AfricanAmerican community or the number of African Americans in management, both of which were examined in the 21st Annual NSBE 50 Survey. Most important, when individuals perceive a strong ethical climate, they may be more likely to interview with the organization, rate it as a first-choice employer and ultimately accept a job offer from the employer — clearly a notion that employers should consider! The ideas discussed above were the basic premise for this year’s special research section of the NSBE 50 Survey. In particular, we sought to examine whether or not ethical climates relate to NSBE members’ attraction to an organization. The first climate was Machiavellian in nature and focused on self-enhancement. In this type of culture, power is more important than money, employees protect their own interests above those of others, and they would be willing to lie if it meant advancing in the organization. This is the sort of culture that creates a Bernie Madoff. Needless to say, this sort of climate was not attractive to NSBE members. The second ethical climate focused on “doing the right thing.” Employees in this climate feel a sense of responsibility to their peers and to society as a whole. They have confidence in their ability to do what’s right when faced with dilemmas and take responsibility for mistakes. In the first two ethical climates, the behaviors of individual employees, both good and Continued on page 32 EthicAl climAtE prEfErEncEs Before examining NSBE members’ attraction to specific employers based on the types of ethical climates the employers possess, it was necessary to understand the types of ethical climates that NSBE members most prefer. Survey participants were asked to read a set of statements concerning organizational ethics and then rate how important each statement was to them when considering a future employer.
