Excitement. New places. And a steady increase in pay, which is nice,” says 35-year-old Rahim. “I think it’s been a good career, but very different.” “It’s been an eye-opening experience. Full of adventure,” agrees Monique, 30, his wife. “There is always something new thrown your way, whether that is a new assignment, a big new security project that’s coming on board that’s going to change the way we deal with security in an overseas environment, the latest cell-phone threat or the latest computer security threat in terms of who’s going to try to tap into our networks to steal our information.” Welcome to the world of Diplomatic Security, or “DS” as it is known by those who work there (www. diplomaticsecurity.state.gov). DS is the federal law enforcement and security arm of the U.S. Department of State. As a law enforcement agency, DS investigates visa and passport fraud, terrorism and related crimes, such as human trafficking and identity theft. In its security role, DS protects the U.S. secretary of State, visiting foreign dignitaries, U.S. classified information and Department of State personnel and facilities at home and abroad. Rahim and Monique began working at DS in 2002. In fact, they first met during their nine-month training and got married four years later. Now security engineering officers, Rahim and Monique work every day to ensure that U.S. diplomacy can be conducted in a safe environment. “Your primary focus is on life safety issues — keeping the embassy and Americans inside that embassy safe from harm.
