Like Nothing Else S From left: the Muzeo complex in Anaheim; a current exhibition from the International Spy Museum features an FBI agent’s declassified files Eclectic programming is the norm at arts showcase Muzeo. et amid the theme-park bustle of downtown Anaheim, Muzeo is a world apart: a bastion of culture that celebrates art, heritage, and the creative community. Brilliantly unconventional, Muzeo boasts no permanent collection to speak of — instead, it brings three traveling exhibitions to the museum each year. The result is an eclectic schedule that offers visitors the chance to experience a variety of national and international shows that would not otherwise visit the region. Past shows have included a traveling exhibition of more than 100 live frogs, a retrospective on Spanish master painters, and a display of the tools of contemporary espionage. Through September, visitors can experience Spies, Traitors and Saboteurs: Fear and Freedom BY JOSH JENISCH Muzeo 241 South Anaheim Boulevard Anaheim, CA 714.956.8936 muzeo.org in America and uncover stories of homeland espionage, treason, and deception. The Muzeo complex is an architectural gem. It incorporates Anaheim’s Carnegie Library (built in 1908) and includes a 5,000square-foot main gallery, a small theater, and a suite of high-tech research facilities. The state-of-the-art exhibition space is both intimate and interactive. But what really sets this museum apart is its focus on its audience. Without a permanent collection, Muzeo isn’t weighed down by tradition. It offers self-guided podcast tours and a huge assortment of classes, lectures, and weekend festivals. Muzeo is committed to presenting exhibits that people are hungry for, like last year’s comprehensive (read: delicious) overview of the history of chocolate. It’s a novel curatorial approach, and it just plain works. After all, any museum that manages to incorporate free chocolate into an exhibit is certainly doing something right.
