Shop & Splurge Retail therapy — 18th-century style By Waynette Goodson C olonial Williamsburg redeﬁnes “retail therapy.” Imagine strolling along the cobblestone Duke of Gloucester Street, listening to the clip-clop of horse and carriage, and the baa-ing of sheep in a neighboring pasture. A light, crisp breeze carries the smell of freshly cut ﬁrewood. Suddenly, you’re completely at peace — and ready to peruse one of the many period stores, where costumed storekeepers greet you as if it’s still the 18th century, “A good day to you, Madame.” Expect a mile of shoppertunities ﬂanked by the Capitol to the east and to the west, none other than Merchants Square, an 18th-century-style retail village sporting more than 40 shops, a wide variety of restaurants, and even an art gallery.
