tered telescopes. There's also a new,
state-of-the-art aquatic facility with a
lazy river and waterslides, a luxurious
spa, a marina, first-rate restaurants, and
hotels and rental homes, all connected
by more than 35 miles of car-free paved
bike paths. It's a perfect family destination with summer-camp flair that also
happens to have excellent golf: three
18-hole courses by Robert Trent Jones
II, Bob Cupp, and John Fought; a
child-friendly 9-hole par-3; and a rare
natural-grass, 18-hole putting course
(think mini-golf on steroids). The marquee Crosswater course has been included on Golf Digest's Top 100 list
and is an exceptional layout full of
meandering trout streams; in June, it
hosted the PGA Professional National
Championship for the third time.
There's a reason most people
haven't heard of Streamsong : It's
brand new. There's also a good reason
everyone will soon know about Stream-
song: It's home to what are arguably the
two best public courses in Florida, the
state with the most courses. Because
nearly all of Florida is flat, its golf
courses skew toward the artificial, lined
with fountains and condos. Streamsong
is a world apart, a little chunk of Scotland or Ireland dropped between Orlando and Tampa and an easy drive
from either. The 16,000-acre site was
a phosphate mining operation in the
1960s and has more than 1,000 acres
deeply covered in sand. Not coincidentally, the world's very best courses, from
St. Andrews to Pinehurst to Pine Valley
to Bandon Dunes, are all built on sand.
After driving a long, rural, winding
road, Streamsong suddenly appears as

offers its sponsored pros. Reynolds
spans more than 12,000 acres, and
lodging choices run the gamut from
rental condos and homes to the cozy
seven-room Landings Inn to a luxurious Ritz-Carlton. Reynolds Plantation
is easily one of the top ten golf resorts
in the country by any measure, but very
likely the least-known member of that
elite list.
Once Oregon's legendary Bandon
Dunes resort took over the top spot in
golf rankings, the rest of the Pacific
Northwest fell off the map. But familyfriendly Sunriver Resort, just south
of Bend, has many incredible features,
including a huge nature center and the
Oregon Observatory. There's an impressive collection of telescopes for
public viewing, and guests can do
daytime sun viewing with special fil-
