And that care inﬂuences every aspect of the school, from academics to athletics. Rooted in the Jesuit, Catholic tradition, SJU provides a rigorous education for 4,750 undergraduates, as well as graduate and doctoral students. The school's General Education Program exposes students to core liberal arts subjects before they move on to advanced study in their chosen major. The Jesuit emphasis on engaged learning means that students receive extra mentoring and guidance from faculty. Outside the classroom, students participate in more than 100 clubs, from Greek life to Gospel Choir. Every week, hundreds of SJU students volunteer in and around Philadelphia, and many travel over spring break to work for charitable organizations such as Habitat for Humanity. That same spirit extends to SJU athletics. While the Hawks celebrate recent athletic achievements, such as the women's basketball team capturing the A-10 Championship in 2013, student-athletes are also encouraged to be "everyday champions" by striving for academic excellence, serving others through faith-based initiatives, and seeking opportunities for personal growth. The numbers say it all: The average studentathlete GPA is 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale), and all 20 varsity teams participated in community service projects throughout 2013.
