graduated last spring; she now studies nursing at Forsyth Technical Community College and plans to become a pediatrician. The Collaborative relies heavily on volunteers. “It’s easy to get complacent about education and not think we need to be active,” says the new chair, Susie Campbell. A longtime volunteer herself, Campbell is the former chair of United Way of Forsyth County’s Women’s Leadership Council. “It truly requires all of us to take an interest in the success of our students,” Campbell adds. There are plenty of big-picture achievements to tout. According to school system figures, the district’s four-year graduation rate increased from 71 percent in 2008 to nearly 81 percent in 2012; the graduation rate for minority students jumped from 62 percent to 76 percent; and the rate for economically disadvantaged students rose from 58 percent to 73 percent. Proficiency in end-ofcourse testing for these groups also saw big gains. As for identifying students who could use a hand, Dossie Poteat believes “the earlier the better.” He’s the principal of East Forsyth Middle School where the Women’s Leadership Council funds a two-week Summer Success Academy for rising sixth graders. “The kids appreciate it,” says Poteat, “and the parents are really buying into the program.” None other than the superintendent of Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools Cooperation is easy; collaboration is hard. But clearly it’s really starting to pay off. —Don Martin, superintendent, Winston-salem/forsyth county schools agrees. “What the community can do is to help students develop the confidence that they can succeed,” says Don Martin. “We’ve been working really hard for four years, and the community has stepped up and surrounded kids with counseling, coaching, and mentoring. Cooperation is easy; collaboration is hard.
