rarely matched seasons in Pennsylvania
big-game hunting, a discussion needs to
take place: Exactly what qualifies as a
Quadruple Trophy, and how do we refer
to hunters like Savage and Graham, who
were fortunate enough to get a second
bird in that license year, as well?
Roderick "R.T." Bliss, of Bangor, might
be the ideal person with whom to begin
this conversation - but not because he
took two turkeys in 2004-05.
Bliss kicked off "a banner season," as
he calls it, by taking an elk.
It was a cow, and he stalked within 32
yards of her before she rose from her bed
and was met by the sharpened blades on
an arrow launched from Bliss' compound
bow.
He was told he was the third hunter to
have taken an elk with a bow since the
return of the elk hunt in 2001. And even
today, few archers have taken elk.
With elk tag filled, Bliss backed down
the bow's poundage, and kept it in service
in the archery deer season.
Hunting with a friend in Barrett Township, Monroe County, Bliss downed what
he described as "just a beautiful buck."
The 10-point with little side-sticker
points is the second-biggest he's taken.
Effective as it had been, Bliss would
hang the bow on the rack for the fall
turkey season, opting instead for his trusty
10-gauge Browning - a wallop-packing
big barrel his friends affectionately call
"The Sewer Pipe."

Again hunting in Barrett Township,
and with the last day of the fall turkey
season winding down, Bliss was about
ready to head back to camp and call it a
year when a gobbler with a 6-inch beard
ended up on the wrong end of "The
Sewer Pipe."
As bear season approached, Bliss said
he really didn't think about the possibility of a Quadruple Trophy. But then, one
of his friends suggested that if he were
to do it, he would have accomplished
something neither of them - nor anybody
else they knew - had ever heard of before.
Bliss had taken a Maine bear previously, but bear had eluded him over the course
of about 30 seasons in Pennsylvania.
He soon would have the opportunity
he awaited. Hunting in Nesquehoning,
just above Jim Thorpe in Carbon County
- the area where Bliss grew up - a bear
would slip within 50 yards of his stand.
But the lone shot from Bliss' .30-06 managed to miss.
Frustrated and feeling he'd blown it,
Bliss left the area, returning again in the
evening. There, at about the same spot
the bear disappeared at the earlier shot,
stood a 175-pound bear, and Bliss' next
shot is all he would need to complete the
Quadruple Trophy.
Returning to Barrett Township a few
months later in the statewide spring gobbler season, Bliss' "Sewer Pipe" would
topple another turkey, a 20-pounder with
a 10-inch beard.
