V The Missouri National Recreational River The river forms much of the border between South Dakota and Nebraska. Designated a National Wild and Scenic River by the National Park Service, it preserves two stretches of the Missouri River (the 59 mile reach between Gavins Point Dam and Ponca State Park and the 39 mile reach between Ft. Randall Dam and Running Water). The vast river f lows quickly past chalk bluffs, and native trees and prairie grasses provide habitat for endangered wildlife. Valiant Vineyards Winery South Dakota’s Oldest Winery Clay County Park is situated along the banks of the Missouri River and offers 34 acres of camping facilities, picnic areas, playground, boat ramp, fishing dock, trails for hiking, biking and viewing nature. The park is a combined effort of Clay Count y and SD Game, Fish and Parks. Spirit Mound is one of the most significant Lewis and Clark sites in South Dakota and one of the few remaining sites where we know with certaint y that Lewis and Clark actually stood.
