Semolina output in the fourth quarter
aggregated 8,722,000 cwts, up 7% over
8,189,000 a year ago. It also was up 13%
over 7,373,000 in the third quarter. Durum grind in October-December totaled

2015. At the same time it was down 7%
from 233,000 in the third quarter. Rye
grind in the fourth quarter aggregated
445,000 bus, down 19% from 549,000 a
year ago. It was down 6% from 473,000

ago, up 6%. It also moved up 14% over
16,309,000 bus in the third quarter.
Rye production in October-December
totaled 217,000 cwts, which was down
17% from 261,000 in October-December,

Mostly small changes among
states and state groupings
WASHINGTON - Like the annual
flour production report just issued
by the National Agricultural Statistics
Service for 2016, the state output data
show relative small changes between
2015 and 2016 flour output. NASS
placed U.S. wheat flour production in
2016 at 425,406,000 cwts, up 0.1% from
424,900,000 cwts in the prior year. The
24-hour capacity in the fourth quarter
was 1,619,801 cwts against 1,617,829
a year earlier, and grind for the year
based on this capacity averaged 85.3%,
against 85.5% at the end of 2015, all
numbers showing little change from
year to year.
Among states and state groupings
NASS showed Illinois, Indiana and
Wisconsin in first place, with output
total of 40,994,000 cwts, up 2.3% from
40,091,000 cwts in 2015. Its fourthquarter 24-hour capacity was 142,452
cwts, unchanged from the prior year,

and grind averaged 93.4% in 2016, up
from 91.7% in 2015.
In second rank was Idaho, Montana,
Oregon, Utah and Washington, which
produced a total of 31,607,000 cwts,
down 1.8% from 32,202,000 cwts in
the prior year with capacity at 131,540
against 130,708 and grind averaging
78% against 80.2%.
California was the single state
leader and ranked third turning
out 30,055,000, almost the same as
30,053,000 in 2015. Its daily capacity
in both years was 120,671 cwts, and
grind rate was 80.9% against 81.1%.
Minnesota was fourth at 28,073,000,
against 28,085,000, capacity, 115,120,
and rate of grind, 79.2%, down from
79.5%. New Jersey and New York were
fifth at 27,107,000, up from 26,618,000,
capacity, 102,150, and rate of grind,
86.2%, up from 84.9%.

leader - at 26,725,000 cwts. Ohio produced 25,740,000 cwts; North Dakota,
23,617,000; Texas, 22,507,000; Pennsylvania, 22,451,000; and Missouri,
22,310,000.
All other states now are Alabama,
Arizona, Hawaii, Massachusetts,
Maine and Louisiana. Their output
in 2016 aggregated 20,263,000 cwts,
against 20,097,000 cwts in 2015, capacity was 70,307, and grind was 93.6%,
up from 93.1%.
In the current report, NASS showed
U.S. capacity up 1,972 cwts from a year
ago at 1,619,801 cwts. The largest daily
capacity gain was in North Dakota,
up 11,000 cwts to 92,500, followed by
Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Utah and
Washington, up 832 to 131,540, and
Michigan, up 300 to 39,200. The widest
reduction in capacity was Iowa and
Nebraska, down 6,700 to 57,676 at the
end of 2016, and Pennsylvania, down
3,480 to 90,400. MBN
