The UCLA Department of Anesthesiology and
Perioperative Medicine is committed to promoting global
health through education, patient care, research, and
advocacy. Residents, fellows, and faculty participate in

Nicole Andonian, CA-2, recently won a coveted Global
Health Travel Grant from UCLA Health for research in
Armenia. With a UCLA surgery resident, she will travel
there this spring to study beliefs, attitudes, and practices
concerning breast cancer screening as part of a breast
cancer initiative of the Armenian Ministry of Health.

Residents Abroad
Hangzhou, China
Through a partnership with the Second Affiliated Hospital
of Zhejiang University School of Medicine (SAHZU),
UCLA anesthesiology residents have the opportunity
to participate in a clinical and educational rotation at
SAHZU, a tertiary medical center. Founded in 1869,
SAHZU is one of the largest hospitals in Zhejiang
province practicing Western Medicine. With over 3,200
inpatient beds, 60 operating rooms, and a volume of
over 60,000 surgical cases per year, residents participate
in a wide range of clinical experiences, including cardiac
anesthesiology, neurosurgical anesthesiology, pain
medicine, traditional Chinese medicine, and more.
Residents attend and participate in a morning conference,
journal club, and case discussions, as well as learn different
techniques to anesthetize patients. SAHZU provides an
invaluable experience for our residents, who immerse
themselves in a different healthcare system with a
different patient population and different resources. They
return home not only with a rich and memorable cultural
experience, but also with a new perspective.
Nikki Yin, MD, traveled to Hangzhou during her CA-3
year, and offered these comments on her experience:
"During my visit, not only was I actively participating
in patient care, including line placements for surgery,
intubations, and transesophageal echocardiography, I was
also able to teach medical students basic intubation skills,
give a talk to the anesthesia department about pulmonary
hypertension, and provide feedback on manuscripts
and residency education. Although my ability to speak
Chinese is lacking, particularly with medical vernacular,
everyone at the hospital was more than eager to help
translate or help me navigate both in and out of the
operating room."
