SK: Dean Featherstone initially recruited me for
the position of special advisor to the dean on
strategic initiatives and subsequently appointed
me as the chief executive officer of UCSF Dental
Center. The goal of this endeavor is to deliver outstanding patient experiences and care through
an integrated center of excellence. At the time
I was wrapping up my negotiations, Dr. Ophir
Klein, who was chair of the Orthodontic Division,
asked me if I would also take on that position,
since he had been offered an opportunity in the
Medical School. While my plate was already full,
my loyalty to UCSF orthodontics was too strong

to turn this down. With the offer of dual responsibilities to the Dental Center and the Division,
recruitment for a leadership position for Yvonne
in periodontics, and the fact that Yvonne's family
lives in San Francisco, we went for it.
Of course, when one takes on a new leadership
role, the programs and endeavors must be evaluated, input gathered, and goals set. Both for the
Dental Center and the Orthodontics Division, it
has been a period of intense activity for the past
three years. We have made excellent progress due
to exemplary support from our team of outstand-
