Groups Host Napa
Wildfire Tour
CAWG, Wine Institute, Napa Valley Grapegrowers, Napa Valley
Vintners and Winegrowers of Napa County in late November
hosted a tour for Sacramento policymakers of Napa wineries and
vineyards affected by the devastating fires in 2017 and 2020. It
provided an opportunity for them to see firsthand how the fires
impacted the area and what needs to be done to recover and
prevent such fires in the future.
KEY TAKEAWAYS FROM THE TOUR
* Environmental laws are making it difficult to maintain land
in post-fire situations. When land cannot be maintained (i.e.
remove dead trees, plant new native vegetation, etc.) this often
results in invasive species taking over and creating fuel for
future fires.
* When ag land is turned over to a land trust, through an
easement for example, the land is sometimes not maintained,
which unintentionally creates fuel for fires.
* It should be easier to create new range land, which serves as a
firebreak.
* Commercial property insurance is essential, but is sometimes
unavailable. We need an insurance solution for catastrophic
situations.

CAWG is proud to be the only statewide organization focused
exclusively on issues affecting winegrape growers and their
operations. The continued support from members ensures a
strong unified voice for the winegrape industry.
CAWG's membership year is Dec. 1, 2021 to Nov. 30, 2022. Dues
are $4.75 per acre and minimum grower dues are $250 per year
for 52.6 acres or less.
