for most patient problems. This is also the year that you start to
take "upper year call", guide interns in their own development and
assume new responsibilities for an increasing panel size including
obstetrical patients and their newborns. You have become more
efficient with the EHR but the number of patient office visits and
notes doubles and triples. As relationships with your patients
develop and responsibilities increase, so does one's sense of
professional identity and satisfaction with the role of the physician.
Lastly, in third year you take on the duties of a junior attending,
with more emphasis on teaching as well as some of the finer
aspects of patient care such as the prevention of disease and patient
"wellness". You are more comfortable with your patient panel and
the relationships you have developed. However, as you get closer
to the end of this final year you face the loss of the close patient
contacts you have developed and face changing relationships with
colleagues. With excitement but also with some anxiety you look
to the future knowing that you are well trained but also facing an
ever-changing climate of medicine. You pledge to yourself that
you will always serve your patients well and also promise to remain
focused on your family responsibilities and your own wellbeing. The
restrictions and limitations placed on you during residency is not
only for your health and wellbeing, but is the stimulus to become
more efficient. Family medicine is truly a calling or passion, and it is
