particular effect that's really pleasing to
me. It's really about thinking about what
the song needs. There are times when I
want to correct pitch, but I don't want to
lose the human element. Sometimes in
Pro Tools, I'll use pitch shift, now called
Pitch Shift Legacy in AudioSuite, and
go through and spot-treat words here
and there that don't sound great. But
now, with Auto-Tune Pro, you can really
finesse it. You can set the retune speed
to get the 'life after love' sound [Cher,
'Believe'], but cranking up the flex tune
makes the bends between the absolute
pitch really natural. You can get into
this kind of uncanny valley of perfect
pitch but not sound too auto-tuney. People who cut down others for using this
plugin vs. that, you've already lost the
conversation. Put that energy into your
local elections, please, and just relax
about making records.

On the song 'Us (How Sweet It
Was)', tell me about the vocal
harmonies and textures.

You're likely referring to the vocoder
cloud from duendita. I think she recorded her vocal initially with a vintage mic
through a Roland SP-404 sampler. It creates this really nice effect, including a
little hiss, which I think is really nice. As
for what's going on behind her vocal,
Antares has a great plugin called Harmony
Engine that can add four voices to the
main vocal that you can manipulate pitchwise. You can also send MIDI information
into Harmony Engine. Those keyboard
chords in that song were played by the
writer, producer Biloba. Biloba sent me
the MIDI files of his keyboard parts, and
I sent that MIDI information into Harmony Engine with duendita's voice as the
guide for the harmonies, like a vocoder.
It creates chordal versions of her melodic

information. Then from there, you just
sauce it up with some modulation and a
great reverb like Valhalla Vintage Verb. 

On 'No Future', what did you use
for the old school CR-78-sounding
drums?

Well, I actually have a Roland CR-68,
but actually, on that one, I used samples
from a Rhythm Ace loaded into my Elektron drum machine on five pads with
some hip-hop kicks and hi-hats on the remaining pads. The AR MKII allowed me
to fuse these beautiful, warm old vintage
drum machine sounds with super hard-hitting kick, snare, and hats on that song.

Tell me about the cool envelopefollowed bass effect on the second
half of 'Catch You'.
