Jetrader: Can you talk a little bit about
Delta's plans for growth during the next
decade? Are there regions where the company is specifically focusing its efforts?
GW: Delta has a great network.
Domestically we're well positioned and
continue to invest in our hubs along with
the associated airport infrastructure.
Internationally, we've assembled the best
partners in the best regions, and many of
those we've made equity investments in
along with joint ventures. The relationships

with the partners we have are really deep
and synergistic, and that gives us the platform for continued growth, both domestically and internationally.
Jetrader: On a related note, are there
regions that Delta feels have reached
their peak with respect to growth where
the carrier might be scaling back efforts?
GW: We're fortunate in that we really
remain quite bullish throughout the world.
There are some markets that fluctuate due

This came along with trying to reach scale
on some smaller fleets like the MD90, and if
you fast forward, the financial performance
and pre-cash flow at Delta has improved.
Our fleet strategy has evolved, and now
we're far more focused on the long term
around fleet simplification, total economics and customer product preference  -
along with ancillary benefits like MRO
and manufacturing.
Jetrader: I know that the carrier's fleet
age is near the top in comparison to other
U.S.-based carriers. How much of a factor
is fleet age to Delta?
GW: We fundamentally believe in getting
the full life out of the asset, and Delta
has developed the technical expertise to
achieve that full life while producing the
best operating performance in the industry.
We've invested to create what we call Delta
Flight Products. This is an engineering and
manufacturing business; it's a wholly owned
subsidiary, and it's capable of design and
certification, as well as project management
in the manufacturing of interior modifications. That capability is an important part of
our fleet strategy. In the lifecycle of the aircraft, we'll accomplish at least two or three
complete interior replacements. And Delta
Flight Products allows us to better control
the product from a customer experience
standpoint as well as the timeline, cost and
quality associated with the interior modifications. Additionally, we have invested
heavily in our MRO capability, along with
surplus material-purchasing capability
through Delta Material Services, which
buys used aircraft for part out to support
our fleets throughout that total lifecycle.
