machines are operating close to each other. Efficiency
is improved, as operators can better anticipate driving
decisions by monitoring traffic and workflow cycle.
Three other apps are considered Toolbox
Applications. The Calculator can be used for quick
mathematical calculations and unit conversions.
The Notes app allows for digital notetaking in the
cab. And the Weather app gives operators current
and upcoming weather conditions to inform
operation decisions.
In addition to the new applications, some existing Load Assist features have been upgraded. The
Radar Detect System option is now integrated into
the Co-Pilot, giving operators rearview camera and
load information on a single screen for increased
convenience and safety.
With two new Task modes on the On-Board
Weighing app, operators can choose from Trip Meter, Truck Loading, Stockpiling or Processing mode.
Each mode will adapt the Co-Pilot screen layout
and provide relevant information for increased
efficiency in different applications.
Volvo has also made machine updates to the
11 models in its L60H to L350H wheel loader lineup.
Now standard on all of them, a rimpull control system enables operators to minimize wheel spin and
optimize the balance between rimpull and hydraulic
functions. In turn, it helps reduce tire wear and fuel
consumption for more efficient bucket filling.
The oil change interval has been extended to
1,000 hours, and on L150H to L260H wheel loaders, a new quick-fit system enables cleaner, faster
oil changes. Also, new handles have been installed
on both sides of the counterweight facility, helping
make service points more accessible.

Felling Trailers Turns Conceptual
Needs into Reality

When a customer needed to replace an antiquated fleet asset with a trailer to transport, payout,

and install underground conductor, Felling
Trailers, in collaboration with its dealer, Vermeer
Southeast Sales & Service, turned conceptual
requests into reality.
Specifications and requirements included
transporting three reels, each equipped with a
tensioning brake system that one person could
operate from a centralized location. It also needed
a fifth-wheel style hitch with air brakes. And the
trailer had to perform all functions without damaging the underground conductor being paid out.
The solution was the FT-40-2 Triple Reel trailer.
Using its deep experience, the latest industryleading techniques and cutting-edge technology,
the Felling team designed and built the custom
unit. It's equipped with a one-piece, three-reel
rack assembly, comprising three 86-inchdiameter, 52-inch wide, 7,000-pound reel bars.
Hydraulic, versus mechanical, tensioning brakes
allow the material to be paid out in a controlled
manner and eliminate over-spinning the reels if
the pull is stopped abruptly.
Hydraulic accumulators on the tensioning
brakes absorb pressure changes that develop from
rotor intolerance and heat buildup, to ensure they
operate smoothly. FT-40-2 also incorporates a
single, double-acting hand pump, in a control
bank on the rear roadside of the trailer, that
provides hydraulic pressure to all the calipers at
the same time. If the need arises, the operator can
isolate and control each brake circuit individually.
To meet the hitch specification, a custom
H-frame gooseneck design, with kingpin, delivers
50-inch fifth wheel height, 16-inch set back, and
62-inch swing clearance from the kingpin back
to the gooseneck, providing ample height and
clearance.
Two booms help ensure the integrity of the
material. An adjustable overhead boom, with
126-inch raised height from the deck floor, has
two positions: lower position to keep the overall
height legal during transport and raised position
for paying out material when on-site. The retractable rear boom extends 36 inches out the back of
the trailer when deployed.
Both booms are equipped with stringing blocks
for routing the underground conductor through
the reels to the final point of entry, into an underground duct, vault, or trench, without coming into
contact with anything that could damage it.

ICS 701-A Power Cutter is GameChanger in Pipe Repair

Through a partnership with the BP-Husky Toledo
Refinery, George Gradel Co. performs one to two
jobs per month there involving 4-, 12-, 16- and
even 20-inch water and ductile iron lines.
" The contract for BP-Husky Toledo Refinery goes
up for grabs every five years, " explained Brian Wood,
superintendent at George Gradel. " We've been the
'house' team for 40 years (underground for 10 years).
If anything breaks in the refinery, we get it first. "
With over a century of operations, the BP-Husky
Toledo Refinery can process up to 160,000 barrels
of crude oil each day, providing the Midwest with
gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, propane and asphalt. If a
water line leaks or a pipe breaks, the problem must
be fixed as soon as possible.
In the past, that has been a challenge. When a
water line or pipe needed to be replaced, workers
risked their safety by using spark-producing saws.
For Wood and his crew, the ICS 701-A pipe
power cutter with PowerGrit Diamond Chain is a
game-changer. Not only does the power cutter and
chain combination reduce sparks, but it does what
the previous saw did, in a fraction of the time and
with tremendous cost savings.
An example is a recent 15-inch cast iron pipe
repair by George Gradel Co. at the refinery.
" Before, if we were cutting 15 inches on a pipe,
it would have taken three days with a five-person
crew, " reported Wood. " That cost alone would
have been $2,000 a day. Now, it would take us
20 minutes with a five-person crew. "
