CIPP Reunion to Celebrate
50th Anniversary, Pioneers
A technology that forever changed the face of infrastructure
rehabilitation, and launched a wildly successful and beneficial
market will celebrate its 50th anniversary at the annual
Underground Construction Technology Conference &
Exhibition, July 13 - 15 in Nashville, Tenn.
In conjunction with UCT and Underground Construction, a
cured-in-place pipe (CIPP) industry committee has developed
a special 50th CIPP Celebration reception that will honor two
Pioneers of CIPP. Also, a unique educational program track will
review and reflect upon the history of CIPP, plus project upon
the continued successes of CIPP.
CIPP founder Eric Wood will be honored, posthumously, along
with Bob Affholder of SAK, as the first Pioneers of CIPP. These
two individuals, widely credited with the creation and expansion
of the technology, will be awarded during the special CIPP 50
Celebration on Tuesday evening, July 13.
The event will also serve as a reunion for the thousands of
people who have worked in the CIPP industry and continue
to proudly serve in the market. Geared for old-timers and
newcomers, all participants in CIPP are welcome at the
reception to honor the Pioneers, relive historic challenges and
predict the future of this disruptive technology.
In announcing this first-ever CIPP Celebration, industry
organizers project it will be an opportunity to bring all the
seasoned, current and future industry participants together
for a look back - and forward - at the amazing CIPP industry.
Whether you are long-since retired or a recent entry into the
market, this is an event that honors CIPP.

CIPP 50th Celebration Education Program
Tuesday, July 13

*	Keynote: From the Beginning: A Public Sector Perspective
Speaker: Richard Thomasson, Sr Project Manager, EBA Engineering
The Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission (WSSC) was one of the
first public utilities to extensively use CIPP in North America. In the late
1970s Richard Thomasson was a young engineer working for WSSC. As
fate would have it, he helped manage WSSC's early CIPP work and was
on the job site for the first several installations. A trenchless technology
advocate for over four decades, Thomasson brings a unique
perspective to those early years and how an aggressive CIPP installation
company and a large public utility helped launch an industry.
*	CIPP: Then and Now
Although the basic concept of CIPP has not changed since the 1970s,
the materials, installation techniques and equipment have improved
and changed dramatically. CIPP installations have gone from
inception to a multi-billion-dollar-a-year industry. This presentation
takes a look back at the evolution of product application, installation
and cure procedures and the associated equipment and materials,
that have been developed specifically for the CIPP industry.
*	New ASCE Standard for Design of Close-Fit Liners
ASCE MOP 145 is a state-of-the-art source for the design of flexible,
close-fit linings for the rehabilitation of pipes designed for gravity
flow such as sanitary sewers, culverts, and storm sewers. The design
solutions cover both circular and non-circular pipe geometries,
including non-standard non-circular pipe geometries.
*	Aerial, Gas, Light & Water: Diversification of CIP, which includes
three segments:
The Evolution of CIPP for Fully Structural Pressure Pipe Renewal
CIPP was first introduced in the UK in 1971 to repair an aged gravity
flow sewer line as an alternative to dig and replace methods. This was
followed by its utilization in low-pressure, such as sewer force mains,
in the 1980s. It, in turn, led to the development of ASTM standard
F1216 in 1989, which included non-mandatory design considerations
in Appendix X1. Reinforced CIPP first emerged in North America
in 1998 and has since evolved into the most widely utilized, fully
structural pressure pipe technology on the market. An overview of
current products, capabilities, standards, design methods and industry
developments and will be presented and discussed.
Aerial Gravity Pipe Rehabilitation using Fiber-Reinforced CIPP
With the UV-Light cured, glass fiber CIPP solutions, the ability to
design a fully structural rehabilitation of an existing gravity sewer
pipe is now possible. This presentation will present the particulars of
designing a 24 " diameter liner to support a 24 " concrete cylinder pipe
supported on piers at 32' on-center.
Trenchless Reconditioning of Natural Gas Pipelines via
Cured-In-Place Lining
CIPL technology is effective and cost competitive for metallic gas
pipeline rehabilitation. Ideal applications include difficult-to-access
areas such as bridges, highways, railroad crossings, heavily trafficked
roadways and historic areas. Discussion will include history, testing
and application, with a case study example of PPM's world-record
lining of a 42 " pipeline in East Orange, NJ.
