by the early work of Mark Horowitz
and his former students without me
realizing it. The truth is that I never
met Christopher Terman, Arturo
Salz, or Russel Kao. I had not read
their papers until I looked them up
to prepare this article. But I guess
the idea of expressing signals using
an exponential function has been
flowing in my veins. I could write a
similar story about how Prof. Horowitz's phase interpolator design in
his 1993 ISSCC paper eventually
led to my group's recent work on a
field-programmable analog IC, but
that's perhaps for another time. The
point is that Prof. Horowitz has made
profound impacts in the field of IC
design, computer-aided design tools,
and computer architecture throughout his career.
Prof. Horowitz has been a great
mentor to me since I joined his research group in 1998. Now that I am
a university professor and advising
a group of graduate students myself,
I wish I had paid more attention to
him regarding how to teach, lead, ad-

vise, inspire, and, most importantly,
be friends with students. I regret
that I only enjoyed the benefit of
working with him and did not learn
how to pass that on to others. I am
hopeful that it is somewhere in
my subconscious so that one day I
will be a good teacher myself before
I even realize it!

About the Author
Jaeha Kim (jaeha@snu.ac.kr) is currently an associate professor at Seoul
National University, Korea, where
his research interests include lowpower mixed-signal circuit design
and their design methodologies. He
also founded Scientific Analog, Inc. in
2015, developing EDA tools for analog/
mixed-signal system verification. He
received the B.S. degree from Seoul
National University in 1997 and the
M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from Stanford
University in 1999 and 2003, respectively, under the guidance of Prof.
Mark Horowitz. He is a recipient of the
Takuo Sugano award for outstanding
Far East paper at 2005 ISSCC and was
cited as a top 100 technology leader
of Korea by the National Academy of
Engineering of Korea in 2015.
