This DL tour has accomplished both."
The events didn't end there. In
addition to the DL tour, the Central
Texas Chapter held two other events
the same week. Dr. Ram K Krishnamurthy of Intel Corporation gave
a lecture on Thursday, 21 April, "Energy-Efficient Circuit Technologies for
the Sub 14-nm Era: Challenges and Opportunities." On Friday, 22 April, Prof.
Sam Palermo of Texas A&M University
gave a lecture, "Advanced Modeling
and Design of High-Performance ADCBased Serial Links."

Each talk was well attended, with
the Dallas visit setting the standard
with nearly 80 people from both
industry and academia. Audience
members were engaged and interacted with presenters by asking
numerous questions.
Prof. Nan Sun said, "These DL
talks given by academic and industrial leaders are very beneficial
for both students and local young
professionals, providing them with
a great opportunity to grow their
technical strength. They get to know
the state-of-the-art research develop ments as well as the latest in dustry trends."

In the first part of the talk, time-based
analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) using
voltage-controlled oscillators (VCOs) will
be presented for digital-intensive radiofrequency (RF) receivers. Unlike conventional delta-sigma bandpass ADCs that
require accurate digital-to-analog converters (DACs) and high-speed analog circuits, the proposed architecture provides
bandpass function by time-interleaving
first-order VCO-based ADCs. A time-interleaving VCO-based ADC also increases
the full scale and LSB, which reduces the
magnitude of the noise transfer function.
In the second part of the talk, all-electrical sensors that measure nonelectrical
vital signs such as pulse-wave velocity
and respiration will be shown. The key
techniques that we employ to obtain
wire-free and all-electrical measurement
are bioimpedance and analog-modulated body-channel communication
using VCO-based ADC. Measurement
results of a prototype chip fabricated in
an 0.11-μm CMOS process will be shown.
