Chapter 4-5 Bus Plates Bus: A. Definition: A Bus is any motor vehicle which is designed to transport sixteen or more persons, including the driver, or meets the definitions of bus or motor bus under M.G.L. ch. 90 s. 1. Bus plates can be issued at branch offices. B. Plate Types: There are three types of bus plates: Bus Normal (Plate Type: BUN) Bus Normal plates consist of three to five numbers. Bus Reserved (Plate Type: BUR) Bus Reserved plates consist of one or two numbers. Bus Vanity (Plate Type: BUV) ALARS maintains the plate number preceded by the code "BU". C. Plates Issued: Bus Normal, Reserved and Vanity - Two plates are issued. There are two types of buses: "D" - Bus Type "D" is a privately-owned bus that has a Department of Public Utilities (DPU) certificate. "R" - Bus Type "R" is a privately-owned vehicle that does not have a DPU certificate. D. Plate Fees: A Type "D" bus that is used for special services or charter services is charged the DPU rate per seat. A type "R" bus that carries passengers for hire is charged a full fee, per seat. A Type "R" bus that does not carry passengers for hire is charged a flat fee. If a bus is registered for less than two years (this includes any buses registered in any month other than July), the fees will be pro rated accordingly. 10/06 4:12
