time to build myself another small-caliber flintlock. I purchased a lever-action
.22 Marlin rifle and hunted with it using
only the open sights. It was still fun and
challenging, but I missed hunting with
my flintlock, so one day I broke down
and started building a small-caliber
flintlock for myself.
I decided to build a 40-caliber flintlock this time, figuring it wasn't much
bigger than a .36 and the competition
shooters for whom I built muzzleloaders told me 40-calibers were the most
accurate rifles they shot.
I was still competing with my 54-caliber and thought that a .40 would use
less powder and lead, and with less
recoil than the .54, it would still work
well as a squirrel rifle.
I purchased a Green Mountain barrel
and a nice piece of curly maple and
made a late "Lancaster-style" flintlock.
This rifle shot well from the very first
time I took it to the range. It held nice
and the light recoil made it a pleasure
to shoot.
I won two national muzzleloading
matches with it, and bagged many fox
squirrels and gray squirrels.
Using the rifle for squirrels, I used
about 40 grains of 3F powder with a
spit-patched ball. I've taken plenty of
squirrels at 35 yards with it. I try to make
head shots so as not to damage too much
meat. I figured it would be the last smallcaliber rifle I would build for myself.
Then one weekend I was at a muzzleloading shoot in McClure and overheard
a friend of mine talking about building
a 25-caliber muzzleloader. The smallest
muzzleloader barrel I had ever built for
anyone was a 32-caliber, and I never saw
one smaller than that.
I discovered that Bobby Hoyt, who
makes barrels in Fairfield, was turning
them out. I looked him up and asked
about the caliber. He told me that the .25
shoots accurately with only 15 grains of
4F powder. He said 4F burns cleaner and
leaves less residue in the bore. I asked
if he was making any more barrels in
that caliber and he told me he had two
to make for someone, so I asked if he
could make one for me, too.
It took more than a year to get the
barrel, but it was worth the wait. I got
a nice piece of bird's-eye maple for
the stock and furnished it with German
