SC Guatemala Enlists SC India to
Acquire a New Coffee Bag Supplier
A
s the most cost-effective green bean packing
option, bags made of jute have been a traditional
part of the coffee shipping method for decades.
When a main supplier could not deliver jute bags for
Guatemala's coffee producers & exporters, the staff was
tasked with finding a new supplier, and in turn, found a
new business opportunity for the SC India Office.
"We have worked with our longstanding customers in
Guatemala and Peru for coffee exportation to Japan," said
Lisset Morales de Najera, Foodstuffs sub-manager for
coffee business in the SC Guatemala Office. "Our customer
was previously importing jute bags from Bangladesh for
packing of green coffee beans, as well as jute clothing."
"Recently, the supplier in Bangladesh was short of material
and there was a shortage of packing materials in the local
market. In summer of 2016, SC Guatemala headed the
search for another supplier from India or Bangladesh. We
contacted our SC India Office in Chennai to help search for
jute products from another supplier from India, the world's
largest producer of jute."
Jute is a long, soft, shiny vegetable fiber that can be spun
into coarse, strong threads, often used to make burlap,
hessian or gunny cloth. Jute is one of the most affordable
natural fibers, and is second only to cotton in production
volume and variety of uses among vegetable fibers. These
bags are strong, sturdy and effective as a container for
transporting beans when care is taken to protect coffee
from contamination; these durable bags are also easy to
handle, as well as to pack and stack.
After an extensive study of quality jute bags/clothing
suppliers in the world, the search ended with SC India
securing a supply through Birla Corporation, a suitable and
good quality supplier considered to be a suitable home
for this business. Birla Corporation has begun to supply
to our main customers in Guatemala and Peru, with those
involved hoping the business will increase.
"We are ready to continue this business for the next fiscal
year, working together and receiving support from our
office in India. We hope to expand our business volume
with other bags, clothing weights and new customers,"
de Najera said.

"Bird-Friendly®" coffee. "Bird-Friendly®" refers to organic certified coffee
grown on farms with a shade cover that provides substantial habitat for
migratory and resident birds in tropic landscapes.
* World coffee exports amounted to 9.13 million 60kg bags per month.
* It is estimated that consumers across the world consumed 151.3 million
60 kg bags of coffee from October 2015 to September 2016.
