a Photographer Probing the world

A whole world lives in the center of a flower.
Diane Pattie hones in and waits for the light before
taking her shot. A longtime photographer, Pattie
explores the world through her lens and enjoys the
pursuit of her next great shot.
"I once trudged through swampy waters in
Michigan, searching for wild orchids," she said. "I
didn't know what was in that water, or whether I'd run
into poison ivy or poison sumac. But the orchids were
worth it. They were beautiful."
Growing up in Toledo, Ohio, Pattie took art classes
and excelled in her high school studies. She wanted to
be a commercial artist but didn't have the resources.
"I'm the eldest of six kids, so there was no money for
college," she said.
She landed her first real job at a high-end camera
store and saved enough money to buy her first
35-millimeter camera.

"Everything happened from there," Pattie said. "In
1986, I joined the Toledo Camera Club and was involved
for 18 years. I even served as president for several years."
Pattie believes she inherited an artistic bone from
her mother, who was a creative and talented woman.
"Composition is just in me. I can't cook. I can't sing,
but this is what I do," Pattie said.
In 2001, she dabbled in digital photography.
"It took a while, but I eventually transitioned," she
said, noting that going digital was scary but it also
made life easier.
"No more waiting to see if your shots turned out,
which is nerve-wracking when you're photographing
a wedding or other special event and you don't know
what you captured."
These days, Pattie enjoys learning new software,
special effects and photography tricks.
"There's always something to learn," she said.
