Sara Lee takes honors
at National Pie Championship
Three Sara Lee gourmet pies won first-place
honors at the 2006 American Pie Council
Crisco National Pie Championship in Orlando, FL.
In the "Gourmet" category, Sara Lee's awardwinning pies were Sara
Lee Signature Selections
Orchard Apple Deep Dish Pie and Sara Lee
Signature Selections Cinnamon French Apple Deep Dish Pie. Signature Selections super-premium pies are made with fruit that

is flash frozen to lock in freshness.
Also in the "Gourmet" category, Sara Lee
Foodservice's Chef Pierre Red Raspberry
Pie won first-place honors. The pies feature
raspberries in a flaky
home-style crust.
"Our pie recipes feature flaky crusts, sunripened fruit, tangy fillings and the perfect
blend of spices," said Peter Reiner, senior vicepresident of marketing, Sara Lee brand, Sara
Lee Food & Beverage, Downers Grove, IL.

Hodgson Mill changes ownership
Hodgson Mill, Inc., Effingham, IL, was acquired from Siemer Milling Co. by Robert Goldstein and Cathy Siemer Goldstein of Teutopolis, IL. Mr. Goldstein was vice-president of
production for Hodgson Mill for the last 15 years and has assumed the position of president.
Ms. Siemer is the sister of Richard C. Siemer, president of Siemer Milling. The transaction
was effected through an exchange of stock.
Ownership of Siemer Milling remains with members of the Siemer family and the Siemer
Employee Stock Ownership Trust.
For several reasons, the timing of the transaction is very positive for Hodgson, according to Mr. Goldstein, who noted that the company has benefited from its relationship with
Siemer Milling dating back to the 1980s. "But we have grown to the point where we can
easily stand on our own," he said. "We will benefit from our strong identity with wholegrain foods - increased consumption of whole grains was recently endorsed by the federal
government's 2005 Dietary Guidelines for Americans.
"And we will emphasize organic and special-needs products to a greater extent than we have
previously done. There has never been a better time to be making and selling healthy foods."
Mr. Siemer, too, noted an important positive in the transaction. "It puts the ownership
and management of each company more firmly in the hands of people who really believe
in the mission and the products of the respective companies," he said. "Hodgson Mill has
been part of our organization since 1988. It's been a lot of fun, and we'll miss it. But both
companies are growing and financially healthy, and we're confident that they both have
good futures ahead."

Bread headlines The
ACE Bakery cookbook
Sprinkled liberally with quotes about the
bread of life, ACE Bakery, Toronto, ON, serves
up "The ACE Bakery Cookbook - Recipes
for and with Bread." Company co-founder
and co-owner, Linda Haynes gathered recipes used in the bakery along with personal
recipes collected from friends and family.
The text is punctuated by "handwritten
notes" much like a beloved, well-used cookbook. The chapters include: Breads and
Basics, More Than Toast and O.J.; Nibbles,
Spreads and Other Openers; Soup, Soupe,
Zuppa; Salads - Centerpieces and Sides,
Sandwiches and Picnics, Not Just Meat and
Potatoes, Sweet Things plus a glossary and
Bakers Lingo section.
A portion of the profits from the cookbook are allocated to Calmeadow, the charitable foundation created by Ms. Haynes and
her husband, Martin Connell.

Shearer's Foods
named 'Best Place
to Work'
Shearer's Foods, Inc., Brewster, OH, received
the 2006 Manny Award from Inside Business magazine. Editors, along with a team
of business leaders, selected the winners
of five different categories from a group of
manufacturing leaders in Northeast Ohio.
Shearer's was chosen as a winner in the "Best
Places to Work" category. The awards were
presented May 23, 2006, at Windows on the
River in Cleveland, OH. Bob Shearer, c.e.o.,
was the keynote speaker.

Sara Lee appoints new ad agency
Looking to stay atop the bread category
through innovation and marketing efforts,
Sara Lee Food & Beverage, Downers Grove,
IL, enlisted TBWA\Chiat\Day, Los Angeles,
CA, as its advertising agency of record for
the Sara Lee brand. The agency will be responsible for all advertising - television,
radio, print and outdoor.
Chiat\Day will assist in strategic devel-

opment and execution of advertising in the
US for Sara Lee brand products, including
fresh bread and bakery products, frozen desserts and baked foods, and deli lunchmeats,
cheeses and condiments.
"We are looking forward to a creative
partnership with Chiat\Day to drive continued growth for one of the most recognized
and respected consumer food brands in the

world," said Kim Feil, senior vice-president
and chief marketing officer of Sara Lee Food
& Beverage. "Sara Lee has a great lineup of
innovative new products and strong heritage products. Advertising is an important
element of our marketing efforts and will
be fully integrated with all of our marketing
programs, including in-store point-of-sale
consumer communications and execution."
