Bequests, Gifts and Donations
Hood College is grateful for the generous support from alumnae and alumni, friends, parents, corporations and foundations. Some of the more significant gifts received during the past six months are highlighted on these two pages.
By Nancy Gillece ’81, Vice President for Institutional Advancement Hood Receives Gifts for New Gymnasium and Fitness Center Hood College is moving forward with plans to construct a new gymnasium and fitness center. At its June meeting, the Board of Trustees asked the administration to begin the process of selecting an architect. Since the first of the year, alumnae, alumni and friends have supported this effort with gifts and commitments that will be used to name various areas of the gym. Naming gifts and commitments have been received from: Philip A. Berkheimer, Robert G. Hooper, Betsy McCain McAlpine ’51, Janet Spaulding Nunn ’61 and Earlene Thornton, members of the Hood College Board of Trustees; Albert H. Cohen H’06 and Lois Vars Mason ’51, emeritus members of the Board of Trustees; Kathryn Z. Nicodemus H’05 and Charles A. Nicodemus H’05, an emeritus member of the Board of Trustees; Jewel Smith ’96 and Matthew Warner, members of the Hood College Board of Associates, KBE Building Corporation; Elinor “Poppy” Herndon McCarty ’60; and Kozo and Martha Hearn Shimano ’86. In addition, members of the Class of 2010 asked that their class gift be combined with gifts from the classes of 2009, 2011 and 2012 for a naming opportunity. Gifts Strengthen Endowed Scholarships and Prizes Hood College continues to receive support for established scholarships and prizes with gifts from alumnae and alumni, friends, parents, corporations and foundations. Gifts to already established scholarships and prizes received since January 1, 2010, include: Carol Lumb Allen ’59 for The Carol Lumb Allen ’59 & Caroline Finkenbinder Lumb ’30 Scholarship; Virginia Price Bracken ’67 for The Class of 1967 Memorial Scholarship; Anne Wallace Effland ’79 for The Mary Margaret Rose Award; Tonya Thomas Finton ’78 for The Janice R. Hylen ’78 Memorial Scholarship; Gail L. Gamble ’69, H’93 for The Class of 1969 Endowed Scholarship; Doris Cole Goyette for The Janice E. Cole Scholarship; R. Byard Hires for The Carol Schulthess Hires ’68 Scholarship; Robert G. Hooper; Carol A. Kolmerten for The Janice E. Cole Scholarship; James V.K. Ladd for The Susan McAlpine ’47 and Margaret McAlpine ’46 Scholarship; M. Page Durkee Laughlin H’03 and Henry P. Laughlin H’03 for The Dr. Henry P. and M. Page Laughlin Special Awards Trust Fund; Susan G. and R.J. McCullagh III for The McCullagh McCutcheon Scholarship Fund; Gail Witham Pohl ’67 for The Class of 1967 Memorial Scholarship; Mark S. Shipley ’97 Endowed Scholarship Fund; Frances Pickle Wetmore ’52 for The Jane D. McCarrell Prize; Susan L. Whaley ’74 for The Marycatherine Anthony ’74 Scholarship; and Kathleen Turner Wickman ’67 for The Class of 1967 Memorial Scholarship. In addition, the College received gifts in memory of Vivian Velehradsky Reardon ’51 for The Chug Scholarship, a scholarship funded by Vivian and Robert M. Reardon. Contributions were also received in memory of William V. Kelly P’81 for the The Maureen Kelly Hess ’81 Prize. M&T Bank Makes Donation to Annual Businesses for Hood Campaign Frederick’s M&T Bank awarded a $5,000 gift to support the College’s annual Businesses for Hood campaign. Gifts to the campaign not only contribute to the growth and overall excellence of the College but directly support academic programs, athletics and the library. “Through this gift, M&T Bank has shown its commitment to higher education, understanding and recognition of the impact Hood College has on the greater Frederick community,” said President Ronald J. Volpe, in accepting the gift from Kevin C. Jackson, vice president of commercial lending for M&T Bank and a member of the Hood College Board of Trustees.
