SUMMER 2010

and a granddaughter expected in July. Ann and her daughters attended the wedding of Denise Howard Mason’s son in New York. Marge Livingstone Frisk and her husband divide their time between North Falmouth, Mass., and Hollywood, Fla., where her husband teaches at Florida Atlantic Univ., and will travel to Ireland for vacation and business in August. They have three children and expect their second grandson in September. Marj Menchey Bernstein still enjoys teaching music, grades K through second, is living in downtown Frederick and has been in a happy relationship for two years. Her daughter, who was married in May, is a teacher in Frederick. Peggy Muncie loves her new life in Greenville, S.C., filled with volunteering, working part time and improving her golf game. Her younger daughter will be married in September. Donna Newman lives in Atlanta and works now with a group specializing in financial planning for senior citizens. She loves traveling—Machu Picchu and Italy are favorite places. I (Karin Ninesling Infuso) enjoy my new home near Pinehurst, N.C. My husband and I fill retirement days with gardening, reading and traveling—recently to New Orleans. My daughter Kate continues to struggle with the dreadful economy but remains optimistic as she considers graduate school. Marie Oliver Brackbill worshipped at Deborah Clancy Butler’s church in March during a trip to California to visit her son. At our reunion, Marie reconnected with Dorcas Miller Lehman and Cynthia Worley Grill, and realized they all live near Lancaster County, Pa., where Marie lives and works. Anne Parkin Pierpont has been happily married for 25 years, lives in Pennington, N.J., and works in financial aid and enrichment programs at a private school in Princeton, N.J. Her daughter, who recently graduated from Indiana Univ. with a degree in telecommunications and art, works in Chicago. Anne supplied the guitar Marty Hassell played at our reunion dinner and showed us The Frederick News-Post from June 16, 1970, with the full-page article about our graduation. Thank you, Anne! Sue Pendell Johnson is familiar with the plane routes between Venice, Fla., where she lives and Winston Salem, N.C., where her two grandchildren live. The highlight of the reunion for Sue was the impromptu sing-along with Marty Hassell at the class dinner. Mary “Sam” Ryan Reeves enjoyed recent trips to St. John, U.S. Virgin Islands; Charleston, S.C., Savannah, Ga., and Asheville, N.C. She attended the wedding of her goddaughter, Sando Bernstein, in Wilmington, N.C., and after her son Erin’s marriage in June, she will relax at her beach house in South Bethany Beach, Del. Two months before reunion, Ellen Sacks and Sam decided on the reunion souvenir—a yellow beach towel, our class color, with the Hood logo and “40 Years” on it. The towels were a great hit. Part of the cost went to our reunion gift to the College and Ellen plans to enjoy her towel this summer. Nancy Schneider Alder continues to enjoy her five grandchildren. At the class dinner, Nancy told us about Phyllis Ackley Dowd’s long recuperation after a serious automobile accident. Our classmates expressed concern about Phyllis and wished her a speedy recovery. Our condolences to Paula Haines Curtis-Burn whose father William died Feb. 10, 2010, in Doylestown, Pa. Ann Tim Kane is currently living in Boquete, Panama. She retired in January 2008. Vickie Smith Diaz plans to retire in 2011 after 38 years as a special education teacher. She enjoys biking, hiking and swing dancing. Vickie’s daughter lives in New York City. Thank you to all who contributed to the column. Please be in touch with other members of the class and encourage them to attend the next reunion.

Cynthia Clifford 1666 Grove St. San Francisco, CA 94117-1323 (415) 563-5273 (415) 824-1072 (fax) clifford@texture.com Thanks to Linda Cumber Gifkins for creating a Facebook group called Hood 72 so we can start making plans for our 2012 reunion. There are already 11 members and we’d like to get the entire class on board, so please join and post some photos. Linda wrote that she now lives full time in southern Vermont with John, her husband of 36 years. In March, their son Colin, 32, and his wife Jamie, who live in their brownstone in Brooklyn, gave them their first grandchild, Owen. Son Jamie, 30, and his wife Dina live in Rutherford, N.J. Linda’s worked in the travel business for years but will take a break this summer when she leaves Travelocity after nine years. Chrisse Butler Hassett M.A. ’75, Betsy Briddell Kipp and Nancy Williams Bishop are planning a mini reunion this fall in Maine. Marsi Durham Quigley hails from Tucson, where she’s a fiscal analyst in the budget office at the Univ. of Arizona, and husband Andy is director of environmental services for the city. Daughter Allison, 25, is an RN at MD Anderson Cancer Hospital in Houston; son Michael, 22, is working and in school in Chicago. Iris Evans Johnson wrote that she’s happy to share her news on Facebook (see Iris Johnson). She mentioned that it was her big sister, Jo Ann Obermeyer ’69, and Ginny Pagan Schragel ’69 who introduced her to her dear husband Al. After 30 years on the coast of Maine, Anne Francis Phillips decided to move to the Southern California desert last July, where she assumed the position of director of education/programs at the new Tolerance Education Center in Rancho Mirage. Anne invites you to stop by if you’re in the area. Marti Murray Robinson continues to teach English at Ulster County Community College in New York. This summer she’s traveling to Ireland with family and attending an NEH Landmarks workshop in Plymouth, Mass., on the pilgrims, Puritans and Wampanoag Indians. She gets together regularly with Pat Kidd ’74, Carol Crawford Heffler and Connie Meek ’69. Son Dan is pursuing his master’s in geology at the Univ. of Buffalo. After many years of our wondering whether Kathy Stewart was in the witness protection program, Virginia Procino Hartmann made contact! Kathy reported that she retired in 2007 after almost 25 years as a senior intelligence analyst with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration. She worked national and international narcotics investigations, living in diverse locations including New Orleans, Miami, Bolivia, Tajikistan and, finally, Harrisburg, Pa. She was on the aerial surveillance team in the upper Amazon basin, lead analyst in the indictment and conviction of corrupt Bolivian Supreme Court justices, was part of Miami’s massive wiretap program and was onsite analyst for the development and initiation of DEA’s permanent office in Dushanbe, Tajikistan. She now enjoys a more sedate life crafting, gardening and planning more travel adventures (next stop … a fall 2010 cruise around the tip of South America). You can contact her

at pacena333@msn.com. She’d especially like to hear from Becky Mills Hitt ’70, Antoinette Dobil Lucia ’73 and any of the Hearts card players from Shriner. Kathy and I (Cynthia Clifford) send kudos to Marcia Coyle DiBiagio ’73, H’08 for her fine coverage for PBS of the Senate confirmation of Sonia Sotomayor, the first Hispanic Supreme Court Justice. Kathy and Gini made plans to meet at the Philadelphia International Flower Show in March. This quickly evolved into a mini reunion of classmates, many of whom hadn’t seen each other in 35 years or more. They met at the Marco Polo restaurant outside Philadelphia. Gini’s husband Tom, son Thad and daughter-in-law Lisa joined Kathy Martin Belikoff and husband Larry; Jane Chaisson Blake and husband Joe; and Helen DeLeonard for a memorable evening catching up and sharing family stories and many Hood stories. Does anyone other than Kathy remember the fire started in Gini’s and Kathy’s dorm room during a memorable costume dinner party? On Sunday, Gini, Lisa and Kathy toured the Flower Show, where Helen joined them for the Garden Tea. Jane and Joe have lived in Bethlehem, Pa., since 1984 and are grandparents. Jane’s working with a group for developmentally disabled kids. Son Tedd, and his wife and daughter live in New York City, as do daughters Courteney and Meridith. Gini and Tom’s son Thad graduated from the Univ. of Pennsylvania Law School, magna cum laude. The next week, daughter Bea graduated from Mount Holyoke. This fall, a ceremony at the U.S. Air Force Academy will again honor Gini and 11 other Air Training Officers who were selected from a field of 1,500 women to train the first class of women to enter the academy in the summer of 1976. Gini and her ATO friends were honored in December 2008, when the Academy etched a glass wall with each of their names and created a display case which includes one of Gini’s uniforms. At the Class of 1980’s reunion this fall, many will be seeing the display for the first time. Barrie Parsons Tilghman couldn’t make this gathering but promised to make the next one—as did I. Barrie is taking a break from being mayor and thinking of running again after a breather. Her son Andrew and his wife are new parents and Andrew is a writer for the Military Times in D.C. Brenda Stup and husband Steve Tulloss look forward to frequent visits to the West Coast, where daughter Katie works as a graphic designer and Bikram yoga instructor in Mountain View. Brenda retired after 30 years of working in the social security and Medicare programs. In January, Steve retired from his job as a systems analyst with the Medicare program. Now they’re enjoying remodeling their house in Ellicott City, Md. Kris Vasey Smith wrote from Honolulu, where she’s been the alumni relations coordinator at Hawaii Pacific Univ. since 2000, facilitating communications among 24,000 alumni. Greetings from San Francisco. Have a wonderful summer and keep that news coming.
